Oggi non vedo
l’ora di parlarvi di un libro che mi ha tanto sorpreso, un libro che mi ha
impressionato e deliziato allo stesso tempo, un libro che mi è piaciuto
talmente tanto che quando ho finito le quasi 500 pagine, avrei voluto che
continuasse ancora perché mi aveva reso avida del suo contenuto. Il romanzo di
oggi è il Sorgo Rosso ed è la seconda opera dello scrittore cinese Mo Yan che
io leggo. Il primo libro che avevo letto, Le Rane e che ho recensito QUI mi
aveva già fatto apprezzare molto questo scrittore per il modo oggettivo in cui
evoca ed analizza i fatti e per gli spunti di riflessione quasi filosofici che
condivide con il lettore, ma dopo aver letto questo romanzo ho cominciato ad
apprezzare Mo Yan anche come scrittore, come narratore e creatore di
letteratura. Forse sembrerà presto fare una simile affermazione dopo aver letto
solo 2 libri, che totalizzano più di 850 pagine, ma dopo aver letto quest’opera
ho subito capito che Mo Yan è diventato uno dei miei scrittori preferiti. Prima
di parlarvi nello specifico di questo romanzo vorrei fare una piccola
precisazione, il vero nome dello scrittore è Guan Moye, Mo Yan essendo il suo
pseudonimo, una scelta audace perché la traduzione del suo pseudonimo significa:
“colui che non desidera parlare”, curioso per qualcuno che ha scelto di fare lo
scrittore ma su questo argomento ritornerò più avanti quando parlerò del suo
modo di scrivere.
Il Sorgo Rosso è
un romanzo storico che narra la storia di una famiglia del distretto di Gaomi nella
regione di Shandong, estesa su diverse generazioni. La narrazione è in prima
persona e non per caso in quanto anche l’autore è nato e cresciuto nello stesso
posto. In realtà, questa opera che è il sua primo romanzo, vide la luce del
giorno nel 1986 quando l’autore consegui anche la laurea al dipartimento di
letteratura dell’Academia d’Arti e subito colse l’interesse del mondo
artistico. L’anno successivo, nel 1987, fu realizzata la trasposizione
cinematografica delle prime due parti del romanzo dal regista Zhāng Yìmóu, film
che l’anno seguente vinse l’Orso d’Oro al Festival Internazionale del cinema di
Berlino. L’argomento trattato in questo romanzo è la vita di una famiglia
particolare, le sue relazioni, i rapporti nella comunità, le avventure e le
sofferenze patite durante la seconda guerra sino – giapponese. La narrazione in
Sorgo Rosso è realizzata su una struttura di piani sovrapposti, in avanti e
all’indietro, dal 1925 al 1972 circa, partendo dal matrimonio arrangiato di Dai
Fengliang, la nonna del narratore, al ritorno del nipote, questo personaggio
assente, al paese dei suoi nonni e di suo padre. La narrazione spazia da eventi
che descrivono la vita, le tradizioni popolari e le abitudini della popolazione
contadina all’epoca antecedente alla seconda guerra sino – giapponese, agli
eventi scaturiti dall’invasione giapponese, al comunismo reale menzionando
anche la rivoluzione culturale che scosse il comunismo appena istaurato. La
narrazione ha una struttura quasi epopeica, la presenza di diverse generazioni
le conferisce l’aspetto di un vero saga mentre la presenza di certi personaggi
canaglia che diventano eroi le dà un carattere di mitopoiesis, creazione di
miti. I personaggi principali di questo romanzo sono: Yu Zhan’ao, un ragazzo
turbolento che con il passare degli anni si trasforma in un bandito e poi in un
comandante della resistenza contro l’invasione giapponese, Dai Fegliang, una
ragazza di modeste origini che si vedrà cambiata la vita dopo l’incontro con il
giovane Yu, Yu Dougan, il figlio dei primi due personaggi e il padre del
narratore, un adolescente che la guerra renderà forte, Zio Liu o Arhat Liu,
lavorante anziano nella distilleria della famiglia Shan che inseguito sotto
l’amministrazione di Dai Fengliang diventerà un prezioso consigliere e fedele
amministratore. Altri personaggi importanti che compariranno successivamente
sono Lian’er, la seconda moglie di Yu Zhan’ao, una ragazza sensuale e
misteriosa la cui rabbia alla fine diventerà profezia, Cao Mengjiu, capo
distretto, famoso per la sua saggezza e spirito di giustizia apparentemente
incorruttibile, Collo Macchiato, il bandito che diventerà esempio di vita per
Yu Zhan’ao, Occhio Nero, il capo della Società di Ferro, una delle
organizzazioni della resistenza contro l’invasione giapponese, e Jiang Piede
Piccolo, il comandante dell’Ottava Armata. In verità ci furono diverse
organizzazioni a combattere contro l’invasione giapponese e le loro dinamiche
erano molto complesse e per niente scontate. Per quanto riguarda gli eventi, io
che non conosco a fatto la storia cinese, confesso che sono stata molto sorpresa
e sbalordita dalla genesi di alcuni momenti, dalle dinamiche di altri e dal
modo in cui sono stati percepiti dal popolo cinese.
Vorrei finalmente
parlare dell’aspetto che mi ha più impressionato in questo romanzo e cioè delle
sue ricchezze sul piano letterario. Il sorgo rosso è un romanzo che eccelle in
figure retoriche ma a impressionarmi così tanto non è stato il numero di
metafore, epiteti, assonanze, ossimori, ipostasi e quant’altro ma la loro
qualità, la loro forza, la loro capacità di creare immagini, suoni, odori,
impressioni e di persistere a lungo nella mia mente. Mo Yan ha un talento molto
speciale, un talento rarissimo che è quello di raccontare fatti terribili senza
creare scompiglio o ripugnanza e lo fa grazie alla sua capacità di usare le figure
retoriche. Espressioni come: “sangue morbido e liscio come piume di uccelli”, “dopo
la morte, il suo volto era bello come la giada” oppure “dalla bocca e dal naso
spruzzò fuori il sangue scarlatto come una freccia” dipingono un quadro vivido,
intenso e memorabile senza risvegliare ansietà e senza frenare o rallentare il
flusso della lettura. Grazie all’uso dei piani sovrapposti lo scrittore ci
rivela eventi tragici aumentando gradualmente l’intensità in modo che il
lettore ormai informato dell’epilogo non viva l’angustia e il terrore
associati. Senza fare uno spoiler, menziono come esempio la morte di zio Liu di
cui l’autore ci informa già dal primo capitolo con frasi semplici e che più
avanti andrà a richiamare aggiungendo dettagli e colori per costruire e
concludere un quadro di brutale violenza. Questa costruzione graduale è la
chiave per mantenere vivo l’interesse dei lettori senza creare panico e subire
perdite. Essendo un romanzo storico che narra eventi di guerra, Il Sorgo Rosso
narra aggressioni, violenze, tradimenti, parla di morte, di suicidio e di
omicidio in tutte le sue forme, ma rispecchia fedelmente la cultura rurale
cinese, le convinzioni, l’ignoranza, la disperazione, la miseria, l’amore,
l’emozione e la rassegnazione che dimora in ogni contadino, ogni bandito e ogni
anima dell’alta pianura cinese. Mo Yan illustra tutto questo con la sua
narrazione senza usare esplicitamente la descrizione ma figure retoriche che in
poche parole evocano usanze, qualità, tratti e impressioni. Ritornando al significato
del suo pseudonimo, la scelta evoca pienamente il suo stile letterario perché
Guan Moye non parla, lui dipinge con parole realtà, fatti, eventi, persone e
posti con una maestria degna del premio Nobel.
Consiglio questo
libro a tutti gli amanti della buona lettura e a tutti coloro che vogliono
esplorare e approfondire la cultura di un popolo millenario ma vi avverto, la
narrazione di Mo Yan crea dipendenza. Dopo aver letto Le Rane, ho deciso di
acquistare Il Sorgo Rosso e dopo aver letto questo romanzo, ho messo nella
lista dei prossimi acquisti altri suoi 3 libri.

Today I can't wait to tell you about a book that surprised
me so much, a book that impressed and delighted me at the same time, a book
that I liked so much that when I finished the nearly 500 pages, I wanted it to
continue because it had made me greedy for its content. Today's novel is Red
Sorghum and it is the second work of the Chinese writer Mo Yan that I read. The
first book I had read, Frog and which I reviewed HERE had already made me
appreciate this writer a lot for the objective way in which he evokes and
analyzes the facts and for the almost philosophical food for thought he shares
with the reader, but after having read this novel I began to appreciate Mo Yan
also as a writer, as a narrator and creator of literature. Perhaps it will seem
to soon to make a similar statement after reading only 2 books, which total
more than 850 pages, but after reading this work I immediately realized that Mo
Yan has become one of my favorite writers. Before talking specifically about
this novel I would like to make a small clarification, the writer's real name
is Guan Moye, Mo Yan being his pen name, a bold choice because the translation
of his pen name means: "don't speak", curious for someone who has
chosen to be a writer but I will return to this topic later when I talk about
his way of writing.
Red Sorghum is a historical novel that tells the story of a
family from the Gaomi district in the Shandong region, spanning several
generations. The narration is in the first person and not by chance as the
author was also born and raised in the same place. In fact, this work, which is
his first novel, saw the light of day in 1986 when the author also graduated
from the literature department of the Academy of Arts and immediately caught
the interest of the artistic world. The following year, in 1987, was made the
film adaptation of the first two parts of the novel by director Zhāng Yìmóu, a
film that the following year won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International
Film Festival. The topic covered in this novel is the life of a very special
family, its relationships, its bonds with the community, its adventures and
sufferings suffered during the second Sino-Japanese war. The narration in Red
Sorghum is carried out on a structure of overlapping planes, forwards and
backwards, from about 1925 to 1972, starting from the arranged marriage of Dai
Fengliang, the grandmother of the narrator, to the return of his grandson, this
absent character, on the lands of his grandparents and his father. The
narration ranges from events that describe the life, popular traditions and
habits of the peasant population at the time before the Second Sino-Japanese
War, to the events arising from the Japanese invasion, to real communism, also
mentioning the cultural revolution that shook the just installed communism. The
narrative has an almost epopeic structure, the presence of several generations
gives it the appearance of a true saga while the presence of certain knave
characters who become heroes gives it a character of mythopoiesis, the creation
of myths. The main characters of this novel are: Yu Zhan'ao, a turbulent boy
who over the years turns into a bandit and then into a commander of the
resistance against the Japanese invasion, Dai Fegliang, a girl of modest
origins who will see his life changed after meeting the young Yu, Yu Dougan,
the son of the first two characters and the narrator's father, a teenager that
the war will make strong, Uncle Liu or Arhat Liu, an elderly worker in the Shan
family distillery who turned under the administration of Dai Fengliang into a
valuable advisor and faithful administrator. Other important characters who
will appear later are Lian'er, Yu Zhan'ao's second wife, a sensual and
mysterious girl whose anger will eventually become prophecy, Cao Mengjiu,
district leader, famous for his wisdom and seemingly incorruptible spirit of
justice, Spotted Neck, the bandit who will become an example of life for Yu
Zhan'ao, Black Eye, the leader of the Iron Society, one of the organizations of
the resistance against the Japanese invasion, and Jiang Small Foot, the
commander of the Eighth Army. In truth, there were several organizations
fighting against the Japanese invasion and their dynamics were very complex and
not at all obvious. As for the events, I, who do not know Chinese history, I
confess that I was very surprised and amazed by the genesis of some moments, by
the dynamics of others and by the way in which they were perceived by the
Chinese people.
I would like to finally talk about the aspect that most
impressed me in this novel, that is its literary riches. Red Sorghum is a novel
that excels in rhetorical figures but what impressed me so much was not the
number of metaphors, epithets, assonances, oxymorons, hypostases and so on, but
their quality, their strength, their ability to create images , sounds, smells,
impressions and to linger on in my mind. Mo Yan has a very special talent, a
very rare talent which is to tell terrible facts without creating confusion or
repugnance and he does that thanks to his ability to use rhetorical figures. Expressions
such as: "blood soft and smooth like bird feathers", "after
death, her face was as beautiful as jade" or "from the mouth and nose
he spray out the scarlet blood like an arrow" paint a vivid, intense and
memorable picture without arousing anxiety and without slowing down the flow of
reading. Thanks to the use of superimposed dimensions, the writer reveals
tragic events to us by gradually increasing the intensity so that the reader
now informed of the epilogue does not experience the associated anguish and
terror. Without making a spoiler, I mention as an example the death of Uncle
Liu of which the author informs us from the first chapter with simple sentences
and which he will later recall by adding details and colors to build and
conclude a picture of brutal violence. This gradual construction is the key to
keeping readers' interest alive without creating panic and have losses. Being a
historical novel that narrates war events, Red Sorghum narrates attacks,
violence, betrayals, speaks of death, suicide and murder in all its forms, but
faithfully reflects the Chinese rural culture, beliefs, ignorance, desperation,
misery, love, emotion and resignation that dwell in every peasant, every bandit
and every soul of China's high plain. Mo Yan illustrates all this with his
narration without explicitly using the description but rhetorical figures that
in a few words evoke customs, qualities, traits and impressions. Returning to
the meaning of his pen name, the choice fully evokes his literary style because
Guan Moye does not speak, he paints reality, facts, events, people and places
with words with a skill worthy of the Nobel Prize.
I recommend this book to all lovers of good reading and to
all those who want to explore and deepen the culture of a thousand-year-old
people but I warn you, Mo Yan's narration is addictive. After reading Frog, I
decided to buy Red Sorghum and after reading this novel, I put 3 more books of
this author on the list of my next purchases.
