La casa delle voci di Donato Carrisi - recensione / The House of voices by Donato Carrisi - book review

Ciao cari amici e lettori,

ENGLISH

Hello dear friends and followers,

Today I would like to review the novel The House of the voices by the Italian writer Donato Carrisi. It is a thriller or a detective novel and even if the characters are not detectives, they try to solve various dilemmas, incidents and even crimes from the past. The main characters are psychologists and specifically hypnotists, so people who use hypnosis in their therapies. The main character is Pietro Gerber, a child psychologist and the other main character is his patient Hannah Hall, a woman who comes from Australia to be hypnotized because she thinks she killed a child when she was a child herself. In addition to them we have several other characters, family members and not only. Pietro's father, even if not present because he was already deceased at the time of the narration, is remembered several times both by Pietro and by other characters. We have a series of other psychologists and doctors from a famous hospital in Florence, the city chosen to host the narration of this novel, but also other equally important characters such as Pietro's family, namely his wife Silvia and his son Marco, important both for the story and for the case addressed.

As you can see in the photos, it is a very consistent novel that has about 400 pages but the narration is quite fluid, it does not weigh down the reader at all, on the contrary, the various twists and the elements of suspense make the novel a very captivating read. I myself had a hard time putting it down and going to sleep or doing any other necessary activity.

The novel deals with different concepts of psychology, so maybe this was quite interesting for me and it also captured me for this reason. For those who have really studied psychology, certain concepts will seem very familiar and fascinating. However, the topics are described and used in a way that anyone can understand and comprehend them. From this point of view the writer has done a great job, so I think that anyone can understand the concepts and read this book easily. I admit that, being familiar with certain concepts, perhaps at a certain point it became quite easy for me to sustain the reading and predict the events and the ending but hoping not to be misunderstood, I assure you that this fact did not determine a devaluation of the quality of the novel.

In conclusion, the narration is very enticing and engaging, many elements will end up surprising you so I recommend this reading to all those who are looking for an interesting read, a good psychological thriller.

Buon Natale! / Merry Christmas! / Crăciun fericit!

A Natale dona un sorriso

Esseri gracili, tristi in perenne ricerca

Give a smile as gift for Christmas

Fragile beings, sad in perpetual research
Vulnerable and unaware that
A smile can make the difference,
For a smile can make us fall in love
And thus forget the pain, the ache,
Giving us calm and joy and make us resonate.

Therefore at Christmas wear your most beautiful smile
The most sincere, loving, the most genuine.
Show it off as if it were an asset, your armor
Protect it as if it were a treasure, a pure seed
That will sprout in a fruitful harvest
For you, for us, in joy and in the most darkest hour.

I Vagabondi di Olga Tokarczuk - recensione del libro / Flights by Olga Tokarczuk - book review

Carissimi lettori,

ENGLISH

Dear readers,

Those of you, who read my literary reviews, are now accustomed to the fact that most of the books I read were written by writers who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, so today's review also always has as subject a creation of a writer awarded with the Nobel Prize. The writer, in this case the author is a woman, is Olga Tokarczuk, the most acclaimed and commercially successful Polish writer. She is famous for the mystical nature of her works and the novel I will review this time, "Flights", won her the Man Booker International Prize and the famous Nobel Prize in 2019.

Olga Tokarczuk has a degree in psychology and considers herself a follower of the school of Carl Gustav Jung which has strongly influenced her writing. She is also a great environmentalist and supporter of animal protection and these topics are very often brought up in her novels. This is the second novel of hers that I have read and although I enjoyed the book “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead”, I enjoyed this novel immensely more. In the novel Flights, Olga Tokarczuk addresses different themes and concepts using her knowledge of psychology and philosophy to illustrate her point of view but above all to open the way for the readers to do it on their own. She begins by illustrating the psychology of travel and travelers, identifying movement as the best way to regenerate and therefore defines the static condition as the cause of degeneration. The concepts of Persevering Detoxification Syndrome, Bad World Syndrome, the dichotomy time of the sedentary peoples vs. time of nomadic persons, the martyrdom of nomads through social coercion, the obliteration of man, the mark of death on places or the projection that in some cases generates hallucination have completely captured my attention. Also noteworthy is the poetic nature of his psychological description of the person that I would define as psycholyrical and the technique used to describe concepts such as human rights or discrimination based on skin color. This technique, made of personalized descriptions, cases to analyze, historical facts and events, is used masterfully in several other cases and makes this novel so rich in philosophical, sociological, psychological and even anthropogenesis concepts making them very easy to read and understand even for those who have not studied these topics.

One of these moments of psychological analysis is the self-analysis that the author carries out without subjectivity and half measures. In her self-analysis, Olga Tokarczuk does not recognize in herself the characteristics of a good psychologist because she lacks the ability to listen without intervening and is unable to avoid transference, but this analysis, having identified all this, makes me realize that she is actually a very good psychologist who is not synonymous of psychotherapist because between the two concepts differ om form and purpose.

In conclusion, this novel describes life as a journey and at the end of the journey we will most likely realize that we are just like many others, not particularly different, nor special which could be a shock but, for this very reason we must not be ashamed to mark our path, so that others, in the future, can use it as inspiration thus making us eternal as in a kind of plasticization through words, sentences and pages.

Olga Tokarczuk has a remarkable ability to deal with complex concepts and make them easily accessible to anyone, a quality that defines a good writer (her gender analysis regarding this profession is interesting) because a good writer is ultimately also a teacher, a facilitator and a mediator. I highly recommend this novel despite its 380 pages to all those who are not afraid to think, to question themselves, to research and discover new aspects about facts, about the world, about life, about others but above all about themselves.
