Solo cose belle giugno 2024 / Only beautiful things June 2024

Cari amici e lettori,

ENGLISH

Dear friends and readers,

Unfortunately, since the break due to the fractures in my hand and wrist has to be prolonged (I have never broken anything in my life so I had no idea what it entailed or how long it would last) I decided not to wait any longer and make smaller posts with the help of my smartphone. The fact that I have had a lot of practice typing with my left hand helps a lot.

ENGLISH

So, I'll pick up where I left off two months ago, that is, the beautiful things about the month of June. I'll share with you the second part of my vacation, that is, the time spent in Slovenia and the little foray into Austria. Slovenia is a country that I love very much and so I was very excited to visit Ljubljana, its capital and Lake Bled, one of the most popular tourist destinations. While Ljubljana left a very positive impression on me thanks to its very rich and fascinating history, its very well-kept monuments, its varied and refined architecture, its order, cleanliness, and facilities for disabled people, Lake Bled deeply disappointed me. I don't mean to say that it wasn't a beautiful lake because it is, but this type of lake is full of them in the world and especially in Italy, but the fact that nothing has been done to make it accessible to disabled people, deeply disturbed me. No disabled parking (only one small normal parking lot in the area with the best view), no ramps to enter the premises, architectural barriers everywhere and I could go on like this but I would end up boring you but I think the most important thing is that except for the lake, there is not much that could please tourists. Unkempt vegetation, small paths full of bicycles that made walking difficult, sloppy premises with plastic decorations and many other defects that made me think that Bled was definitely an overrated tourist destination.

LJUBLJANA

Lago Bled / Lake Bled

During our short stay in Slovenia, we made a small excursion to Austria to visit Graz, the second largest city in Austria. The city is beautiful and full of monuments that reflect the history of this country such as the Landhaus, the Mariahilfkirche church or the Uhrturm tower but also in modern and avant-garde creations such as the artificial island Murinsel.

With this, I conclude my post and bid you a warm farewell.

Ritorno in Romania - esperienza di viaggio / Back to Romania - travel experience

IT: Carissimi amici e lettori,

ENG: Dear friends and readers,

Today I share with you a small piece of the summer holidays that ended last month. This year, for health and comfort reasons, I decided to anticipate my holidays to the end of May - the beginning of June and in doing so I enjoyed the colors of summer with the temperatures of a twilighting spring. The goal was to return, after 5 years, to my native country, Romania, and see some of my relatives but, on the way, both on the outward journey and on the return journey, we stopped (a bit out of necessity but also just for the joy of...) to admire foreign and fascinating landscapes, monuments and lands and, I'll tell you about this later or since you are already here, simply follow me on my social networks (buttons at the top).

In today's post I will only talk about my hometown and some cities and areas that surround it. My hometown, Orsova, is located on the banks of the Danube and has existed for well over 2000 years, it was part of the Dacia Malvensis, it was a river port and a castrum. In the dacian language, its name was Tzierna, with the arrival of the Romans, its name changes to Dierna but the final version takes shape during the Hungarian conquest when the city is identified as Orsova, a period from which the first official document also comes which attests to its existence, in 1150, as Ursoua. In all these years, the city has seen many peoples, and it has been a battleground between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs, even in the First World War, on the hills just outside the city, there was the front and even after the independence of Romania from the Ottoman Empire in 1877 and from the First World War, a thriving Turkish community still remained in the vicinity of Orsova, especially near the island Ada Kaleh. The situation changed when Ceausescu's regime decided in 1970 to build the Portile de Fier hydroelectric plant in collaboration with the neighboring country, Serbia, and in order to build the artificial basin that would be used to produce energy, they had to submerge the island Ada Kaleh and some of the surrounding villages. A part of the old monuments were transferred to another village, precious elements of worship for the Turkish ethnic group were moved to the mosques of other cities but many other monuments were lost. So the Orsova you see now was entirely built during the communist regime after 1970. I was born in the new Orsova, my father instead in one of those villages around the old city. Nowadays, the artificial lake also offers many other advantages apart from electricity, kayak canoe teams are trained there, it has exponentially increased tourism on the Danube and in the Cazane area and the terraces and bars built on its banks are always a pleasant atmosphere to meet in the sultry summer evenings to cool off with a drink.

ENG: Another city I would like to tell you about is Drobeta Turnu Severin, the capital of the Mehedinti district, about 30 km by road from my hometown. The peculiarity of this place is that near this city was built by the architect Apolodor of Damascus, the bridge that allowed the emperor Trajan to conquer Dacia. The city was therefore born as a castrum for the defense of this bridge and is mentioned in historical documents as Drobetae. Of the monument in question (destroyed after the retreat of the Roman troops in order not avoid the invasions of other peoples towards the Roman Empire), now only a pylon remains which can be admired by visiting the museum in Drobeta Turnu Severin. In the following years this city was fought and conquered by the kingdom of Hungary, by the voivodes of Wallachia and by the Ottoman Empire, also changing its name to Severino. The current name, was decided only in the 70s of the last century, combined the two historical names, Drobeta and Severin, also adding reference to a medieval tower a reminecence of the old citadel (the word Turnu literally means tower). For tourists, in addition to the pylon of the Trajan's Bridge, the ruins of the old Roman city are still visible. Unfortunately this time I have not had the opportunity to visit these places again but I recommend them as points of interest in addition to the Roman baths, visible in the courtyard of the Porte di Ferro museum, the Palace of Culture built in 1916, the Traian high school, built in 1891 , the Water Castle, designed by the architect Elie Radu between 1912 and 1915, the monument of the fallen heroes in the First World War, the Sala Radu Negru built in 1904 which with its unique architecture and intense colors opens the entrance to the historic center of the city, the General Dragalina park which houses inside: the ruins of the Severin citadel, the ruin of the prison, the remains of the chapel and the walls with cannons and defensive moat, dating back to a period between the 13th and 15th centuries and the Park Central with the monument dedicated to the emperor Trajan and the king Decebal. Furthermore, the walks on the main streets as well as the famous Bouloverd Carol I delight the eye with many picturesque houses and villas built in the most sensational style of the century in which they saw the light of day.

BACI!

ENG: Returning to Italy via the E70 road, I saw Baile Herculane again, another city (with a great history, dating back in this case even to the Paleolithic) with monuments and a strong imprint of Roman colonization (the thermal water discovered by them is still exploited in the spas and thermal pools of this city) and continue on shady roads, bordered by thick green forests all the way to the Hungarian border.

Thank you very much for visiting and for reading my article and I look forward to seeing you in the next post. KISSES!

Solo Cose Belle - ottobre 2022 / Only Beautiful Things - October 2022

Carissimi lettori e amici,

ENGLISH

Dear readers and friends,

The month of October was particularly busy, so much so that I was about to forget the post about the beautiful things of the respective month. Fortunately, Lulù, the blogger friend who currently manages the summary of the respective posts, kindly reminded me.

The month of October started very well because it started with a little vacation. We also took the opportunity to celebrate our wedding anniversary. In October we celebrated 15 years of marriage and to celebrate our crystal wedding we chose to spend a week on Lake Garda. Anyone who is following me on Instagram or has my phone number and respective Whatsapp contact, has already had the opportunity to see photos related to this vacation but for all the other blogger friends, I will share in this post some shots that have immortalized these moments. I took advantage of this moment to lodge in a wonderful place, courtesy of a dear friend of ours who lent us his apartment, to have lunch and dinner in romantic restaurants, with spectacular views and exquisite dishes, to read great books in the silence of a balcony with a breathtaking view and to visit splendid places along the lakeside and the cities of Desenzano del Garda, Limone sul Garda, Riva del Garda, Gardone Riviera, Maderno, Malcesine and Peschiera del Garda.

And I would say that even if the rest of the month went on with various difficulties of all kinds, these moments are enough to compensate for everything else. What do you think about it?

Solo Cose Belle - luglio 2021 / Only Beautiful Things - July 2021

Ciao carissimi amici e lettori,

ENGLISH

Hello dear readers and friends,

The time has come for the appointment with "only beautiful things" and I confess that the enthusiasm was too strong to be able to placate it.  Those who also follow me on social media will have guessed that I'm on vacation and therefore have certainly understood from my stories where I am wandering around.  I have not finished my holidays yet and I have not yet structured a travel post but I will also share on my blog the enthusiasm of the first days when, before arriving at our destination (you will soon find out which one), we stopped in Naples and on the Amalfi coast.  I confess that I have already visited these places as a tourist exactly 10 years ago, when we admired majestic castles, we took the tour with the panoramic bus and walked at will along the Neapolitan, Amalfi and Sorrento sea promenades.  This time not being able to repeat the previous behavior, we stopped at the panoramic points, we lingered in admiring the endless expanse of the sea and the sinuous and colorful edges of the Amalfi coast and we experienced the sunset on the beach with a fragrant glass and delicious dishes in front of us.

Napoli / Naples

La vera pizza si mangia a Napoli / Naples is where one can eat true pizza

Rispetto a 10 anni fa, ho trovato Napoli molto cambiata in meglio.

ENGLISH

The Naples that you can see here was photographed from the hills of Vomero where we also ate the best pizza ever tasted so far.  Both the view and the pizza literally left us speechless.  Compared to 10 years ago, I found Naples much changed for the better.  The promenade is much nicer, full of pottoresque bars and curious tourists.

Costiera Amalfitana / Amalfi Coast

Amalfi

Positano

Sorrento

ENGLISH

As for the Amalfi coast, if 10 years ago the locals were few and the tourists few, this time we noticed a tourist boom.  It was practically impossible for us to stop in Amalfi or Positano and for this reason I only enjoyed it from the car but I had the opportunity to take long and beautiful walks in Minori and Sorrento where there were more free parking spaces.  A little sour note, the parking spaces for disable people were few and all full but although they were all occupied, I did not see wheelchairs, crutches or walkers around other than mine which unfortunately stayed in the car with me.  The photos taken in these cities were made by my husband while I was waiting in the car with the anxiety that the police would not fine us for the 5 minutes of parking in places not used for this.  Despite this, I was still able to admire the beautiful cities, the romantic-style buildings that have inspired so many love stories and so many films.  Fortunately, in order to admire the panorama from above, they have created magnificent panoramic points where you can go down, listen to the sweet sound of the sea, breathe the fresh air and enjoy the breathtaking view.

With these words and photos I greet you and wish you a beautiful summer where all your wishes may come true. With this post I partecipate to the Only Beautiful Things initiative by Fioredicollina

Viaggio a Tropea - un sogno diventato realtà / Trip to Tropea - a dream became true / Calatorie in Tropea - un vis devenit realitate

Salutare dragi cititori,

Before this summer ends and as long as we still have the chance to go to the beach, I must absolutely tell you about another fantastic place in Italy. This place is called Tropea and is another place with a spectacular sea, breathtaking scenery, impressive monuments and exquisite cuisine. I assure you that when you see the photos I've taken, you'll want to get to this beach as soon as possible and immerse yourself in this crystalline sea. Tropea is a small town on the eastern coast of Calabria, Calabria being easily identifiable on the map of Italy as the tip of the boot, is known mainly for the ancient center built on a rock, the beaches of the lower area known as "Marina", but also for the famous Tropea Onions, a red onion much sweeter than the normal white or yellow onion that does not make the eyes tear. Legend has it that Tropea was founded by Hercules who returning from Spain, see the Pillars of Hercules, stopped on the southern coast of Italy and as a testimony of that in the surrounding areas were found graves of the Magno-Greek period. I visited this place on a weekend in my two-week vacation in Puglia this July and I confess that I fell in love with its beauty. Once in Tropea you can not miss a walk in the historic center where you can admire buildings, monuments and nobiliary palaces that testify the history of this city that has seen the Byzantine era and has flourished under the rule of the Normans and the Aragonese. One of these monuments not to be missed is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima of Romania, built in 1100 by the Normans in Roman style, containing the sacred icon of the Virgin of Romania, protector of the city. Legend has it that this icon was stolen by Tropea sailors from a ship coming from the Byzantine East and pushed into the port of Tropea by a storm and therefore was called Virgin of Romania. The same legend tells that the bishop of the city has repeatedly dreamed of the icon asking him to remain in Tropea and from that moment has protected the city and its inhabitants in various difficult moments that have affected this city. A walk in the city center will allow you to rejoice your eyes, smell and taste buds with products from countless traders, bars and strategically placed pastry shops. But before going up to the center, you can not miss the emblem of the city, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola di Tropea, a monument built on the rock facing the city, formerly inhabited by monks. The church has medieval origins and the statue of the Virgin Mary found here has arrived in the iconoclastic period and is said to have performed miracles and treated many sick people. It is also curious the legend of this statue that has begun to work miracles after having previously punished those who tried to mutilate it. Outside this church, you can visit the beautiful garden of exotic plants and admire the fantastic view of the sea, a place where nature explodes in all its beauty and grace. As a last detail, I would like to inform you that to visit the Sanctuary on the rock you need to buy a ticket in the kiosk on the stairway to go up, the cost is modest and at the bottom there is a large parking place, also at reasonable prices.
