Ciao carissimi lettori,

Oggi recensirò Una festa in nero, l’ultimo libro della saga il cui personaggio principale è la graziosa dattilografa Anita Bo della scrittrice italiana Alice Basso. Se fino adesso non ero del tutto convinta che il personaggio principale fosse Anita in quanto la presenza marcata di Sebastiano mi facesse pensare sempre a due personaggi principali, dopo aver letto questo romanzo ho capito che Sebastiano “Satta Coso” era in realtà un personaggio di supporto per Anita e che è letteralmente lei la figura che muove tutti gli ingranaggi di questa storia. Inoltre, mi sono convinta ancora di più che Anita Bo è l’alter ego della nostra scrittrice e quando arriverete al capitolo finale di questo affascinante romanzo di 315 pagine (compresa la postfazione che adoro leggere sempre), vi convincerete anche voi di questo aspetto.

Le vicende narrate in questo romanzo si sviluppano a poche settimane dal matrimonio pianificato (e non più desiderato) fra Anita ed il suo fidanzato ufficiale, Corrado Leone. La storia di amore fra Anita ed il suo capo, lo scrittore, traduttore e giornalista, Sebastiano Satta Ascona, è in pieno sviluppo e occupa la maggior parte della trama di questo libro. A mettere in crisi Sebastiano, che cerca una modalità diplomatica con un certo fare di cavalliere di altri tempi e Anita che sogna ad imprevisti che possano annullare i loro matrimoni con i reciproci fidanzati per poter vivere la loro storia d’amore, è la comparsa di alcuni membri di un servizio onnipresente all’epoca, l’OVRA, ovvero l’Opera Vigilanza o Volontaria Repressione Antifascismo e in parole povere, la milizia fascista. All’inizio l’OVRA si presenta solo nella persona di un omino senza nome e riconoscibile per il suo impermeabile beige ma presto scopriremo che i suoi tentacoli si sono infiltrati e hanno accaparrato seggi in vista delle organizzazioni più rilevanti del paese. L’intento dell’omino “Beige”, che più tardi scopriremo si chiami Nello Pastina, e del servizio OVRA, era quello di reclutare Sebastiano Satta Ascona fra i loro membri, come d’altronde OVRA lo fece realmente con altri membri della categoria, per spiare ed aiutare all’arresto con prove fasulle, membri di alto livello della società non grati al regime di Mussolini. Visto il fatto che Sebastiano ha come dattilografa una delle pupille di Candida Fiorio, una suffragette, nubile e non più in età per procreare e contribuire al bene della patria, nonché sospettata di essere omossessuale e perciò di corrompere le ragazze con cui entra in contatto nel suo lavoro e nelle attività di volontariato preso la ONMI (Opera Nazionale Maternità e Infanzia), l’OVRA chiede a Sebastiano di spiare Candida, avvicinarla e convincerla di organizzare un evento dove avrebbe dovuto piantare ed in seguito scoprire prove che l’avrebbero accusata di furto e perciò fatta arrestare. Ovviamente Sebastiano non desidera fare niente di tutto ciò e convinto da Anita accetta di fingere di stare al gioco per scoprire i loro intenti e cercare di depistarli. Quando scoprono di non poter fare niente di tutto ciò, l’unico piano è quello di far fuggire dal paese Candida e quando scoprono che i piani dell’OVRA non si fermano a Candida e che Sebastiano dovrà fare la spia e far arrestare altre persone innocenti nonché loro amici, il piano viene modificato per permettere la fuga a tutte queste persone. Nonostante il piano e dunque il finale della storia viene descritto minuziosamente fino agli ultimi capitoli, dopo aver letto gli altri romanzi di Alice Basso, sapevo di aspettarmi un colpo di scena che avrebbe rovesciato tutte le presunte certezze. Con una penna degna di una grande scrittrice di romanzi gialli, Alice Basso cambia le carte in tavola e ci sorprende con svolte stravolgenti che per la prima volta in tutti i suoi romanzi di questa saga, abbandonano la scia dei romanzi rosa e si avvicina ai drammi realistici della vita.

Non intendo fare altri spoiler ma credo basti dire che fra tutti i romanzi di questa saga, “Una festa in nero” è il mio romanzo preferito. Si nota la crescita e la maturazione dei nostri personaggi e con loro la stabilizzazione ed il consolidamento della narrazione e dello stile letterario di Alice Basso. In sostanza questo romanzo è il finale degno di una storia d’amore ambientata in un momento storico difficile e sono sicura che verrà compreso e in fin dei conti soddisferà le aspettative di tutti lettori.

Today I'm reviewing A party in black, the last book in the series, whose main character is the charming typist Anita Bo, by Italian author Alice Basso. Until now, I wasn't entirely convinced that Anita was the main character, as Sebastiano's overbearing presence always made me think of two main characters. After reading this novel, I realized that Sebastiano "Satta Coso" was actually a supporting character for Anita, and that she is literally the one who pulls all the strings in this story. Furthermore, I'm even more convinced that Anita Bo is our author's alter ego, and by the time you get to the final chapter of this fascinating 315-page novel (including the afterword, which I always love reading), you too will be convinced of this.

The events narrated in this novel unfold just weeks after the planned (and no longer desired) wedding between Anita and her official fiancé, Corrado Leone. The love story between Anita and her boss, the writer, translator, and journalist Sebastiano Satta Ascona, is in full swing and occupies most of the book's plot. Sebastiano, who seeks a diplomatic approach with a certain touch of old-fashioned chivalry, and Anita, who dreams of unexpected events that might annul their marriages to their respective fiancés so they can live their love story, are thrown into crisis by the appearance of several members of a ubiquitous service at the time, the OVRA, that is Surveillance or Voluntary Repression of Anti-Fascism, or in other words, the fascist militia. At first, the OVRA presents itself only in the form of a nameless little man, recognizable by his beige raincoat, but we soon discover that its tentacles have infiltrated and grabbed seats in prominent organizations in the country. The intention of the little “Beige” man, whose name we later discover is Nello Pastina, and the OVRA was to recruit Sebastiano Satta Ascona among their members—as the OVRA actually did with other members of the same category—to spy on and, using false evidence, assist in the arrest of high-level members of society who were disliked by Mussolini's regime. Given that Sebastiano employed as a typist one of Candida Fiorio's protégés, a suffragette, unmarried and no longer of age to procreate and contribute to the future interest of her country, and suspected of being homosexual and therefore of corrupting the girls she came into contact with through her work and volunteer activities at the ONMI (National Organization for Maternity and Childhood), the OVRA asked Sebastiano to spy on Candida, approach her, and convince her to organize an event where he would have planted and subsequently discovered evidence that would accuse her of theft and therefore lead to her arrest. Sebastiano obviously doesn't want to do any of this, and persuaded by Anita, he agrees to pretend to play along in order to uncover their intentions and try to throw them off the scent. When they discover they can't do any of this, their only plan is to have Candida flee the country. When they discover that the OVRA's plans don't stop at Candida, and that Sebastiano will have to snitch and arrest other innocent people, including their friends, the plan is modified to allow all these people to escape. Although the plot, and thus the story's ending, is meticulously detailed until the final chapters, after reading Alice Basso's other novels, I knew I had to expect a twist that would overturn all my presumed certainties. With a pen worthy of a great crime novelist, Alice Basso turns the tables and surprises us with shocking twists that, for the first time in all her novels in this series, abandon the romance genre and approach the realistic dramas of real life.

I don't want to do any more spoilers, but I think it's enough to say that of all the novels in this series, "A Party in Black" is my favorite. You can see the growth and maturation of our characters, and with them the stabilization and consolidation of Alice Basso's narrative and literary style. Ultimately, this novel is a fitting finale to a love story set in a difficult historical moment, and I'm sure it will be understood and ultimately will meet the expectations of all readers.

P.S.: I made a rough translation of the title because until now, Alice Basso does not yet have any published novels in English. Hope this situation will change soon because I believe the readers around the world would enjoy her writing.

Carissimi lettori,

Oggi ritorno con la recensione di un altro romanzo della scrittrice italiana Alice Basso, il quarto romanzo della saga poliziesca che ha come personaggio principale la dattilografa Anita Bo. Il titolo di questo romanzo è “Le Aquile della Notte” è l’avventura della signorina Bo e del suo capo, l’affascinante giornalista e scrittore Sebastiano Satta Ascona continua nel mese di ottobre e si avvicina sempre di più a quella che dovrebbe essere la fine della loro collaborazione.

Lo scenario di questo romanzo si sposta, Torino compare brevemente solo all’inizio e alla fine del romanzo in quanto i nostri personaggi sono in un certo modo “costretti” dal signor Sauro Bonatti, il futuro suocero di Sebastiano, ad abbandonare Torino per assistere alla vendemmia nella proprietà di Lupo Bonatti, fratello dell’appena menzionato capo del fascio. Lo scopo di questa trasferta è che Sebastiano si avvicini di più alla famiglia Bonatti, prendendo parte ad eventi che coinvolgano Mavi Bonatti, la fidanzata di Sebastiano, i suoi genitori e tutta la famiglia allargata, in modo che lui inizi a sentirsi parte della famiglia. Visto che Sebastiano ha un lavoro abbastanza impegnativo, Sauro Bonatti e Monné, il redattore di Saturnalia, concordano in una settimana di ferie nelle Langhe, dove metà giornata sarà dedicata alla vendemmia e l’altra metà alla traduzione e scrittura di articoli per Saturnalia. Siccome un giornalista a quei tempi non poteva mandare avanti da solo la rivista senza l’aiuto di una dattilografa, anche Anita viene coinvolta in questa “vacanza di lavoro”. Anita coglie subito la possibilità di andarci in modo da potersi prendere una pausa dalle preparazioni per l’imminente matrimonio con Corrado e dalla sua assillante madre.

Questo cambiamento porterà grandi cambiamenti nel rapporto fra i nostri personaggi principali ma non voglio aggiungere altro anche se, sicuramente capirete di quali cambiamenti si tratta una volta che arriverete alla descrizione della villa Fulva e della disposizione delle stanze degli invitati. Restando nella sfera nel lato rosa di questo romanzo, aggiungo anche che ci saranno nuovi pretendenti per l’affetto di Anita, si osserveranno nuove dinamiche fra gli altri personaggi, sia fra i loro amici più cari, sia fra i loro promessi sposi.

Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto giallo di questo romanzo, abbiamo un nuovo omicidio, abbiamo diversi sospetti e tantissime linee di investigazione da seguire. Nella nuova storia, i nostri personaggi incontreranno gruppi che si ribellano alla dittatura fascista e si faranno nuovi amici con cui condividere le passioni censurate dal regime. Non vorrei abbandonare questo argomento senza parlare dei ragionamenti, le considerazioni e le intuizioni che Alice Basso condivide attraverso i suoi personaggi. In questo senso trovo notevole la correlazione fra il crimine e la fragilità umana ed il modo in cui viene ignorata dal fascismo, la questione razzismo che sotto il fascismo diventa una “bonifica delle stirpi”, i tentacoli della censura fascista che coprono sempre più settori generando come contrappeso anche più modi di ribellione ed il cambiamento etico che affliggerà ogni individuo alla ricerca della giustizia e che finirà per accontentarsi del male minore o di lasciare impuniti i colpevoli purché vengano salvati degli innocenti. Alice Basso fa un lavoro eccelso, non solo nella ricerca del materiale che possa illustrare ed esemplificare i concetti espressi ma anche nel modo in cui usa i suoi personaggi per descrivere le situazioni. Visto che a questo punto parliamo del suo talento come scrittrice, vorrei menzionare anche la metafora vino e sangue che l’autrice usa per descrivere la sete di violenza e la fame di morte che alleggiano nelle menti e negli animi di diversi personaggi.

La narrazione è sempre molto fluida, i colpi di scena meglio preparati e celati rispetto al romanzo precedente il che ha reso questo romanzo molto più godibile ed apprezzabile. Detto ciò, consiglio questo romanzo a tutti coloro che cercano un buon thriller ed una più avvincente storia d’amore.

Today I return with a review of another novel by Italian author Alice Basso, the fourth in the detective series featuring typist Anita Bo. The title of this novel is "The Eagles of the Night," and it follows the adventures of Ms. Bo and her boss, the charming journalist and writer Sebastiano Satta Ascona continues through October and draws ever closer to what should be the end of their collaboration.

The setting of this novel shifts, Turin only briefly appearing at the beginning and end of the novel as our characters are somehow "forced" by Mr. Sauro Bonatti, Sebastiano's future father-in-law, to leave Turin to attend the grape harvest on the property of Lupo Bonatti, brother of the aforementioned Fascist leader. The purpose of this trip is for Sebastiano to become closer to the Bonatti family, taking part in events involving Mavi Bonatti, Sebastiano's fiancée, her parents, and the entire extended family, so that he begins to feel part of the family. Since Sebastiano has a fairly demanding job, Sauro Bonatti and Monné, the editor of Saturnalia, agree to a week's vacation in the Langhe, where half the day will be dedicated to the grape harvest and the other half to translating and writing articles for Saturnalia. Since a journalist at that time couldn't run the magazine alone without the help of a typist, Anita also becomes involved in this "working vacation." Anita immediately seizes the opportunity to go so she can take a break from preparing for her upcoming wedding to Corrado and from her nagging mother.

This change will bring major changes to the relationships between our main characters, but I don't want to say anything else, although you'll surely understand just how much change it involves once you get to the description of Villa Fulva and the layout of the guest rooms. Staying within the realm of the romance of this novel, I'll also add that there will be new suitors for Anita's affection, and new dynamics will emerge between the other characters, both their closest friends and their engaged spouses.

As for the detective story of this novel, we have a new murder, several suspects, and countless lines of investigation to pursue. In the new story, our characters will encounter groups rebelling against the fascist dictatorship and make new friends with whom they will share the passions censored by the regime. I wouldn't want to leave this topic without discussing the reasoning, considerations, and insights Alice Basso shares through her characters. In this sense, I find the correlation between crime and human frailty, and the way it is ignored by fascism, the issue of racism, which under fascism becomes a "cleansing of lineages," the tentacles of fascist censorship that increasingly cover more sectors, generating as a counterweight even more forms of rebellion, and the ethical shift that will afflict every individual seeking justice and who will end up settling for the lesser evil or leaving the guilty unpunished as long as innocents are saved, remarkable. Alice Basso does an excellent job, not only in finding material that can illustrate and exemplify the concepts expressed, but also in the way she uses her characters to describe situations. Since we're now discussing her talent as a writer, I'd also like to mention the metaphor of "blood and wine" that the author uses to describe the thirst for violence and hunger for death that linger in the minds and souls of several characters.

The narrative is consistently fluid, and the twists are better prepared and hidden than in the previous novel, which made this novel much more enjoyable and appreciable. That being said, I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good thriller and a more compelling love story.

Una stella senza luce di Alice Basso - recensione letteraria / An Extinguished Star by Alice Basso - book review

 

Ciao carissimi lettori,

A vedere la foto di questo post, sicuramente avete capito l’argomento di questo articolo, si, si, una nuova recensione letteraria. Stavolta andrò a recensire Una Stella senza Luce, il terzo romanzo della serie di gialli che hanno come protagonista la dattilografa Anita Bo, della scrittrice italiana Alice Basso. Come si potrebbe immaginare guardando le foto, ho letto questo libro mentre mi stavo recuperando dopo le fratture alla mano destra, e quindi siccome non stavo molto meglio, non ho dedicato molto tempo alla lettura, perciò il fatto che ci ho messo quasi un mese per leggere un giallo di poco più di 300 pagine, non è stato dovuto al libro, o almeno non in totalità. Vista la mia affermazione, credo sia necessario asserire che secondo il mio umile parere di lettrice, il terzo romanzo è un filino sotto i primi due, non per quanto riguarda il lavoro di documentazione ma per quanto riguarda la costruzione del caso da investigare.

La novità in questo romanzo è che l’azione si sposta nel mondo cinematografico. I casi del famoso detective John Dorcas Smith (personaggio inventato da Sebastiano ed Anita per denunciare le ingiustizie del sistema), attirano l’attenzione di un famoso regista e cinematografo del periodo interbellico. Ovviamente questo interesse preoccupa moltissimo i nostri personaggi principali che temono le rappresaglie del Fascio e dunque affrontano la questione con molta prudenza. I nuovi personaggi appartengono all’elite del mondo cinematografico, oltre al regista Leo Luminari che ritorna a Torino insieme alla sua assistente Maria Diletta e tutta la squadra che ha creato a Roma, abbiamo anche due star del cinema, Luce Sansalvario (una donna stravagante che vive ricordando solo la gloria del passato) e Bracco Morselli (l’affascinante maschio che nasconde un grande segreto), che non hanno mai lasciato Torino. A loro si aggiunge anche Gelindo Borzio, amico di vecchia data del famoso regista con il quale molto spesso si scontra senza paura di ammetterlo. Quando uno di loro muore, le investigazioni, sia della polizia che di Anita e Sebastiano, si concentrano su questo nuovo gruppo.

La narrazione è fluida, arricchita di sontuose descrizioni e innumerevoli colpi di scena. Ogni tanto fermavo la lettura per controllare certe informazioni fornite con astuzia dall’autrice ed in seguito riprendevo con più interesse e decisione. La qualità del giallo è abbastanza diversa in questo romanzo, attira subito la curiosità e alimenta ipotesi ma si ferma ad un certo punto di tensione inconclusa. Di solito quando abbiamo a che fare con una serie di gialli, abbiamo a che fare anche con una scala dell’intensità e bensì la dinamica del giallo in questo caso ha subito notevoli cambiamenti, a mio umile avviso, non ha apportato anche un aumento nella qualità e nell’intensità del mistero. Può darsi che dopo aver letto i primi due romanzi con risvolti notevoli, le mie attese fossero alte, può darsi anche che l’attenzione sempre più incentrata sulle questioni romantiche dei personaggi principali mi abbia distratta e per certi versi infastidita (sapete come la penso sui romanzi rosa) ma il punto è che non mi sono goduta questo romanzo tanto quanto i primi due della serie. Detto ciò, credo che una volta iniziata la serie, la finirò, forse non leggendo i romanzi uno seguito all’altro come ero decisa a farlo quando ho iniziato la serie, ma lo farò. Detto ciò, consiglio comunque questo romanzo a tutti gli amanti di gialli e romanzi rosa che amano anche le belle infusioni di fatti storici.

Seeing the photo of this post, you have surely understood the topic of this article, yes, yes, a new literary review. This time I will review An Extinguished Star, the third novel of the series of detective novels that have typist Anita Bo as the protagonist, by the Italian writer Alice Basso. As you might imagine looking at the photos, I read this book while I was recovering from the fractures to my right hand, and so since I was feeling much better, I did not dedicate much time to reading, so the fact that it took me almost a month to read a detective novel of just over 300 pages, was not due to the book, or at least not in its entirety. Given my statement, I believe it is necessary to assert that in my humble opinion as a reader, the third novel is a little below the first two, not in terms of the documentation work but in terms of the construction of the case to investigate.

The novelty in this novel is that the action moves to the world of cinema. The cases of the famous detective John Dorcas Smith (a character invented by Sebastiano and Anita to denounce the injustices of the system), attract the attention of a famous director and cinematographer of the interwar period. Obviously, this interest worries our main characters a lot who fear the reprisals of the Fascio and therefore deal with the issue with great caution. The new characters belong to the elite of the world of cinema, in addition to the director Leo Luminari who returns to Turin together with his assistant Maria Diletta and the entire team he created in Rome, we also have two movie stars, Luce Sansalvario (an extravagant woman who lives remembering only the glory of the past) and Bracco Morselli (the charming male who hides a big secret) who have never left Turin. They are joined by Gelindo Borzio, an old friend of the famous director with whom he often clashes without fear of admitting it. When one of them dies, the investigations, both those carried out by the police and those by Anita and Sebastiano, focus on this new group.

The narration is fluid, enriched with sumptuous descriptions and countless twists. Every now and then I stopped reading to check certain information provided with cunning by the author and then I resumed with more interest and determination. The quality of the mystery is quite different in this novel, it immediately attracts curiosity and fuels hypotheses but stops at a certain point in unfinished tension. Usually when we deal with a series of mystery novels, we also deal with a scale of intensity and although the dynamics of the mystery in this case has undergone notable changes, in my humble opinion, it has not also brought an increase in the quality and intensity of the mystery. Maybe after reading the first two novels with notable twists, my expectations were high, maybe also that the attention increasingly focused on the romantic issues of the main characters distracted me and, in some ways, annoyed me (you know how I feel about romance novels) but the point is that I did not enjoy this novel as much as the first two in the series. That being said, I think that once I start the series, I will finish it, maybe not reading the novels one after the other as I was determined to do when I started the series, but I will. That being said, I still recommend this novel to all lovers of crime novels and romance novels who also love a nice infusion of historical facts.

Oggi sono qui per recensire un altro romanzo della scrittrice italiana Alice Basso, un altro libro della serie di romanzi che hanno come personaggio principale la dattilografa Anita Bo. Anche questo libro è un regalo della stessa carissima amica e come avevo deciso già prima di iniziare a leggere Il morso della vipera, il primo libro della serie, ho letto Il grido della rosa, il secondo libro della serie subito dopo aver finito di leggere il primo. Come potete già immaginare, i personaggi sono più o meno gli stessi ad eccezione di alcuni nuovi personaggi che vengono dalla casa di tolleranza e dalla clinica per le mamme singole. Un’altra novità consiste nel personaggio cattivo perché stavolta abbiamo non uno ma ben 2 cattivi che fanno la parte diciamo effettiva ed inoltre abbiamo anche una mente criminale, un master mind che dirige le attività criminali. Quindi adesso abbiamo non solo una mente criminale, ma anche 2 cattivi e che fanno la parte esecutoria, e, inoltre le novità di questo romanzo consistono anche nei personaggi positivi che come vi stavo dicendo prima, provengono da ambiti molto diversi e inoltre a questi personaggi abbiamo anche dei personaggi che già conosciamo ma che con questo romanzo diventano molto più importanti perché acquisiscono delle nuove responsabilità e quando parlo di questi personaggi mi riferisco a Clara, la migliore amica del nostro personaggio principale femminile, Anita Bo e a Julian che è il migliore amico del nostro personaggio principale maschile, Sebastiano. Oltre a loro 2 abbiamo un altro personaggio che diventa molto importante in questo romanzo, nella persona dell'insegnante di dattilografia di Anita Bo e Claire, Candida, che sin dall'inizio è stata la loro mentore e che adesso diventa anche parte attiva delle loro investigazioni. 

Finché sono ancora alla parte che riguarda i personaggi, vorrei condividere con voi un vero spunto di riflessione che Alice Basso ha inserito nel romanzo attraverso Sebastiano Satta Ascona. Come ben sapete i libri che più preferisco sono i libri che richiedono che io gli legga con la matita in mano perciò quando mi sono imbattuta nella frase: "se ci sai fare con le donne, di donne ne hai una sola: perché te la sai scegliere giusta e poi perché te la sai tenere per tutta la vita", capirete che non potevo non sottolinearla per rileggerla in seguito. Inizialmente ho pensato fosse la frase che una donna vorrebbe sentire da un uomo ma poi nella postfazione ho scoperto che la scrittrice realmente sentì questa frase uscire dalla bocca di un uomo e per quanto io possa pensare che sarebbe una frase che usata con astuzia da un uomo per impressionare una donna, non potrei ignorare l'aspetto meritocratico, cioè come fare per essere quella donna giusta e al contempo restare cosi per tutta la vita. Frasi simili m'inspirano a volerle analizzare da diversi punti di vista e siccome nei miei post amo condividere anche le mie impressioni, vorrei davvero sapere cosa ne pensate voi al riguardo. 

Arrivati a questo punto, vorrei concedermi una piccola divagazione per fare delle precisazioni che riguardano il titolo di questo romanzo. L'emblema della rosa riguarda le case di tolleranza e le donne che ci lavorano in questi posti e aggiungendo l'elemento del grido, l'autrice annuncia subito gli eventi macabri o comunque molto spiacevoli che avevano luogo in questi posti. Per capire meglio questo concetto vi invito a leggere anche la postfazione di questo romanzo che considero altrettanto importante quanto il romanzo vero e proprio. 

Confermo le mie considerazioni per quanto riguarda il lavoro di Alice Basso in quanto anche in questo romanzo possiamo osservare un grande lavoro di documentazione per quanto riguarda gli eventi, gli scrittori e le pubblicazioni dell'epoca. La narrazione è sempre fluida e scorrevole, condita con piccoli elementi di suspense che rendono questo romanzo non solo un buon romanzo rosa, ma anche un buon giallo. In conclusione, consiglio questo romanzo come un buon modo per approfondire le nozioni di storia e letteratura ed inoltre consiglio anche la scrittrice Alice Basso come una valida scrittrice contemporanea. Ho letto 2 dei suoi romanzi, ho comprato anche il 3º e penso di comprare il resto dei romanzi della serie che vede come personaggi principali Annita Bo e Sebastiano Satta Ascona perciò mi sento fiduciosa a consigliare i suoi libri. Detto questo, concludo la mia recensione e vi aspetto alla prossima recensione letteraria oppure al prossimo post.

Today I am here to review another novel by the Italian writer Alice Basso, another book from the series of novels that have typist Anita Bo as the main character. This book is also a gift from the same dear friend and as I had already decided before starting to read The viper kiss, the first book in the series, I read The shout of the rose, the second book in the series immediately after finishing reading the first. As you can already imagine, the characters are more or less the same with the exception of some new characters who come from the brothel and the clinic for single mothers. Another novelty is the bad guy because this time we have not one but 2 bad guys who play the effective part and we also have a criminal mind, a master mind who directs the criminal activities. So now we have not only a criminal mind, but also 2 bad guys who are the executing part, and, in addition, the novelties of this novel also consist of positive characters that as I was telling you before, come from very different backgrounds and in addition to these characters we also have characters that we already know but that with this novel become much more important because they acquire new responsibilities and when I speak of these characters I am referring to Clara, the best friend of our main female character, Anita Bo and Julian who is the best friend of our main male character, Sebastiano. In addition to these 2 we have another character who becomes very important in this novel, in the person of Anita Bo and Claire's typing teacher, Candida, who has been their mentor since the beginning and who now also becomes an active part of their investigations. 

While I'm still at the part that concerns the characters, I would like to share with you some real food for thought that Alice Basso inserted into the novel through Sebastiano Satta Ascona. As you well know, the books I prefer most are the books that require me to read them with a pencil in my hand, so when I came across the phrase: "if you know how to deal with women, you only have one woman: because you know choose the right one and then because you know how to keep it for life", you will understand that I couldn't help but underline it to reread it later. Initially I thought it was the phrase that a woman would like to hear from a man but then in the afterword I discovered that the writer actually heard this phrase coming from the mouth of a man and as much as I might think it would be a phrase that would be used cunningly by a man to impress a woman, I couldn't ignore the meritocratic aspect, that is, how to be that right woman and at the same time remain that way for life. Similar sentences inspire me to want to analyze them from different points of view and since I also love to share my impressions in my posts, I would really like to know what you think about it.

Having reached this point, I would like to allow myself a small digression to make some clarifications regarding the title of this novel. The emblem of the rose concerns the brothels and the women who worked in these places and by adding the element of the cry, the author immediately announces the macabre or at least very unpleasant events that took place in these places. To better understand this concept I invite you to also read the afterword of this novel which I consider equally important as the actual novel. 

I confirm my considerations regarding Alice Basso's work as also in this novel we can observe a great documentation work regarding the events, writers and publications of the time. The narrative is always fluid and flowing, peppered with small elements of suspense that make this novel not only a good romance novel, but also a good mystery one. In conclusion, I recommend this novel as a good way to delve into the notions of history and literature and I also recommend the writer Alice Basso as a valid contemporary writer. I have read 2 of her novels, I also bought the 3rd and I plan to buy the rest of the novels in the series which has Annita Bo and Sebastiano Satta Ascona as the main characters so I feel confident in recommending her books. Having said this, I conclude my review and I look forward to seeing you at the next literary review or the next post.

Il Morso della Vipera di Alice Basso - recensione / The Bite of the Viper by Alice Basso - book review

 

Ciao carissimi amici,

Oggi recensirò un altro libro, un libro che mi ha sorpreso piacevolmente. Il titolo del libro è Il morso della vipera della scrittrice italiana, Alice Basso. Prima di tutto, vi devo avvisare che questo romanzo non è il solito libro che io compro e leggo, ed infatti non l’ho acquistato io ma mi è stato regalato da una mia carissima amica. La scrittrice non ha vinto il premio Nobel ma è ancora molto giovane e talentuosa e chi sa cosa farà in futuro. Inizio descrivendo la copertina, che in realtà è stata la cosa che mi ha più trattenuto dal leggere il libro perché è la tipica copertina di un romanzo rosa. Appena iniziato a leggere il libro, la trama, ma soprattutto il contesto nel quale la scrittrice ha inserito la sua storia, hanno catturato la mia attenzione. Il periodo storico nel quale gli eventi di questo romanzo si svolgono è il periodo interbellico, di preciso, il 1935. In quel periodo, come ben sappiate, in Italia governava Mussolini ed era appena iniziata la sua offensiva in Africa. I personaggi principali sono Anita Bo, una giovane ragazza che per sfuggire temporaneamente al matrimonio con il ragazzo dei suoi sogni, accetta di lavorare come dattilografa presso una rivista in voga a quell’epoca e Sebastiano Satta Ascona, scrittore, traduttore e redattore presso la rivista dove Anita viene assunta. Anita, dalla descrizione dell’autrice, nonché da tutti i suoi conoscenti, è una ragazza molto bella e quello che le manca come intelligenza e cultura generale, lei lo compensa con una spiccata furbizia e ciò che decenni più tardi verrà chiamato intelligenza personale. Sebastiano invece, come tutti i personaggi maschili dei romanzi rosa scritti da autori donna, è un uomo perfetto, bello fisicamente, intelligente, carismatico, talentuoso, affascinante, coraggioso, insomma, il pacchetto completo. I fidanzanti dei nostri personaggi principali sono creati seguendo lo stesso disegno in quanto bellezza, avvenenza, ricchezza e posizione sociale ma quello che abbonda dal punto di vista delle apparenze, manca a livello intellettivo, sia per Corrado che per Maria Vittoria, chiamata Mavi.

La scrittrice è stata più generosa con Clara, l’amica di Anita e Candida, la loro maestra di dattilografia. Nella descrizione di questo gruppo di donne e amiche, l’autrice ha tirato fuori il suo arsenale migliore, se mi è concesso usare questa metafora nel contesto di un romanzo che si sta preparando alla guerra. Scopriamo in loro le figure che comprendono la situazione sociale della donna in quel contesto politico e lo combattono nel loro areale lottando per la loro indipendenza finanziaria e personale. Siccome a quell’epoca il ruolo della donna in società era quello di moglie e madre, le legge consentendo di lavorare solo alle donne nubili, trovare in quel contesto delle donne che fanno una priorità della loro indipendenza economica e morale non dev’essere stato facile da realizzare. Infatti a quell’epoca, tanti lavori e tante professioni non potevano essere esercitate dalle donne perciò per rendere credibile la storia del romanzo, Alessia Basso ha fatto un grande lavoro di documentazione, trovando nei registri dell’epoca un insegnante di dattilografia con lo stesso nome. Stesso lavoro di documentazione anche per i membri del partito ed i suoi uffici e rappresentanti, per il materiale che i nostri personaggi principali usano nella loro rivista e persino per la rivista stessa, in quanto Saturnalia è stata realmente una rivista italiana che in quell’epoca traduceva romanzi e storie delle riviste in voca negli Stati Uniti. Ad onor del vero, ho parlato del lato romanzato della nostra storia, lasciando per ultimo il vero intento e format di questo libro in quanto Il morso della vipera è un giallo, un romanzo poliziesco nel quale la parte dei detective viene assolta dal nostro scrittore e la sua dattilografa. Sul modello delle storie con i detective che traducono per Saturnalia, i due personaggi fiutano il marcio, individuano il colpevole e lo denunciano nelle loro storie in un modo in cui la censura non potesse ammonirli.

La storia è molto accattivante, i personaggi sono molto interessanti e la narrazione è fluida e scorrevole. Come è giusto in un romanzo giallo ci sono i soliti colpi di scena anche se, non tanto sorprendenti ma, questo per il momento è solo una questione di esperienza in quanto ho grandi aspettative da questa scrittrice e sono sicura che il suo talento si affinerà sempre di più. Normalmente non leggo questo genere di libri ma la narrazione di Alessia Basso, concettualizzata ma non disagevole, documentata ma non petulante, leggera ma non superficiale, mi ha fatto riconsiderare le mie scelte. Vi confesso che ho letto con molto piacere questo libro e anche se non mi ha dato spunti di riflessione mi ha arricchito culturalmente e storicamente e lo consiglio a tutti coloro che vogliono leggere un romanzo accattivante ed informativo.

Today I will review another book, a book that pleasantly surprised me. The title of the book is The Bite of the Viper by the Italian writer, Alice Basso. First of all, I must warn you that this novel is not the usual book that I buy and read, and in fact I didn't buy it but it was given to me by a very dear friend of mine. The writer did not win the Nobel Prize but she is still very young and talented and who knows what she will do in the future. I'll start by describing the cover, which was actually the thing that kept me from reading the book the most because it's a typical romance novel cover. As soon as I started reading the book, the plot, but above all the context in which the writer placed her story, caught my attention. The historical period in which the events of this novel take place is the interwar period, specifically, 1935. In that period, as you well know, Mussolini governed Italy and his offensive in Africa had just begun. The main characters are Anita Bo, a young girl who, to temporarily escape marriage to the boy of her dreams, agrees to work as a typist at a magazine in vogue at the time and Sebastiano Satta Ascona, writer, translator and editor at the magazine where Anita is hired. Anita, from the author's description, as well as from all her acquaintances, is a very beautiful girl and what she lacks in intelligence and general culture, she makes up for with a marked cunning and what decades later will be called personal intelligence. Sebastiano on the other hand, like all male characters in romance novels written by female authors, is a perfect man, physically handsome, intelligent, charismatic, talented, charming, courageous, in short, the complete package. The boyfriends of our main characters are created following the same design in terms of beauty, attractiveness, wealth and social position but what abounds from the point of view of appearances is lacking on an intellectual level, both for Corrado and for Maria Vittoria, called Mavi. The writer was more generous with Clara, Anita's friend and Candida, their typing teacher. In describing this group of women and friends, the author has brought out her best arsenal, if I may use this metaphor in the context of a novel that is preparing for war. We discover in them the figures who understand the social situation of women in that political context and combat it in their area by fighting for their financial and personal independence. Since at that time the role of women in society was that of wife and mother, the law allowing only unmarried women to work, finding women in that context who made their economic and moral independence a priority must not have been easy to realize. In fact, in that era, many jobs and many professions could not be practiced by women so to make the story of the novel credible, Alessia Basso did a great job of documentation, finding in the records of the time a typing teacher with the same name. Same documentation work also for the members of the party and its offices and representatives, for the material that our main characters use in their magazine and even for the magazine itself, as Saturnalia was really an Italian magazine that at that time, translated novels and stories from popular magazines in the United States. To be honest, I talked about the fictional side of our story, leaving the true intent and format of this book for last since The Viper's Bite is a mystery, a detective novel in which the role of the detectives is acquitted by our writer and his typist. On the model of the stories with the detectives that they translate for Saturnalia, the two characters smell the rot, identify the culprit and denounce him in their stories in a way in which the censors could not reprehend them.

The story is very captivating, the characters are very interesting and the narrative is fluid and flowing. As is right in a mystery novel there are the usual twists and turns although not very surprising but for the moment this is just a question of experience as I have high expectations from this writer and I am sure that her talent will always be refined moreover. Normally I don't read this type of book but Alessia Basso's narration, conceptualized but not uncomfortable, documented but not petulant, light but not superficial, made me reconsider my choices. I confess that I read this book with great pleasure and even if it didn't give me food for thought, it enriched me culturally and historically and I recommend it to all those who want to read a captivating and informative novel.
