Ciao carissimi lettori,
Oggi voglio recensire un libro che non solo ha vinto il premio Pulitzer per la narrativa nel 1961 ma ne fu tratto anche il film omonimo nel 1962. Il libro in questione è "Il buio oltre la siepe" scritto da Harper Lee, insignita anche con la Medaglia presidenziale della libertà dal presidente degli Stati Uniti George W. Bush. Io confesso di aver visto tantissimi anni fa il film "il buio oltre la siepe" anche quello un classico premiato con almeno 3 premi Oscar oltre a tanti altri riconoscimenti, ed ero rimasta profondamente emozionata e colpita dalla storia e dal modo in cui veniva descritto e raffigurato un caso di razzismo puro. Il film è particolarmente impressionante ma lo è altrettanto il libro ed essendo raccontato dal punto di vista di un bambino, la brutalità e la malignità della gente colpisce ancora di più il lettore. Nonostante l'argomento, questo libro si legge facilmente ed è scorrevole perché è scritto molto bene, con tanto talento come se fosse un'opera d'arte. I personaggi vengono descritti con la giusta cura da poterceli immaginare davanti ai nostri occhi senza però annoiare o stancare. I personaggi principali di questo libro sono: Jean Louise Finch (Scout) che rappresenta la scrittrice, una ragazza ribelle e testarda, suo padre Atticus Finch, un vedovo, avvocato d'ufficio che lavora con tanto cuore cerca di educare i suoi figli a cercare la verità e rispettare l'etica e suo fratello Jem Finch che ammira molto suo padre e vive con fervore e passione i casi di cui quest'ultimo si occupa. Devo menzionare anche Tom Robinson, un bracciante di colore, duro lavoratore, marito e padre di una bella famiglia che viene accusato di violenza sessuale da Mayella Ewell, una ragazza bianca, sola ed emarginata dalla società e suo padre, Bob Ewell, un vero paria della società, furfante e truffatore, un uomo che odia lavorare, manca di rispetto chiunque ed inculca i suoi stessi valori ai suoi tanti figli e figlie. Altri personaggi cruciali di questo libro sono: Maudie Atkinson, una vera voce della ragione che ci delizia con le sue riflessioni ponderate e frasi ben pensate (che probabilmente rappresenta la figura della scrittrice da adulta), Calpurnia, la cuoca di colore della famiglia Finch, l'unica figura materna che Scout abbia mai avuto e che ama questi bambini come se fossero i suoi, e Dill Harris, l'amico d'infanzia di Scout e Jem che istiga le loro avventure e sprona la loro creatività. Ho letto da qualche parte che Dill raffigura Truman Capote, amico di tutta la vita della scritrice Harper Lee e famoso per aver scritto i romanzi Colazione da Tiffany e A Sangue Freddo. Non posso concludere la descrizione dei personaggi senza parlarvi di Boo Radley, anche lui una vittima della società e della sua famiglia anche. Per quasi tutta la durata del libro veniamo a conoscenza della sua esistenza solo dalle imprese dei tre amici, Scout, Jem e Dill ma alla fine si rivela una vera sorpresa. Il suo altruismo servirà finalmente a svegliare una società ottusa e rimettere a posto l'ago della bilancia.
Credo che presentando questi personaggi vi abbia già svelato parzialmente la trama di questo romanzo, ma spero lo stesso che vorrete leggere questo libro. Sapete già che non amo fare spoiler e quando si tratta di un libro tanto apprezzato, mi sento però in dovere di fornirvi i dettagli sufficienti per suscitare il vostro interesse.
Leggendo questo libro sono stata particolarmente colpita dalla metafora del merlo, il titolo del libro in inglese è "to kill a mockingbird", cioè uccidendo un usignolo. Nella traduzione in italiano di questo libro ci si riferisce a questa specie solamente dal punto di vista di una delle categorie che ne fanno parte di questa specie, cioè i turidi, in particolare il merlo. Il merlo è un uccello che vive in coppia e che si ciba di frutta e soprattutto d'insetti. Viene cacciato incautamente per i piccoli danni che potrebbe recare ai frutteti senza considerare i grossi benefici che l'uomo e gli stessi frutteti traggono dal fatto che questo uccello si ciba di insetti dannosi. Il merlo ha un canto molto bello, allegro, vivace, una vera sinfonia. Atticus, ribadisce diverse volte che uccidere un animale tanto utile quanto gradevole fosse un peccato, un vero peccato. La traduzione del titolo in italiano, "il buio oltre la siepe" costituisce un'altra metafora. La siepe separa la casa dei Finch da quella dei Radley ed il buio rappresenta l'ignoto e la paura che genera il pregiudizio. Ma a differenza dei bambini che sconfiggono la paura ed il pregiudizio, gli adulti non riescono a farlo con altrettanta facilità. Spero avrete occasione di leggere il libro per confrontarci e scambiare opinioni al riguardo.

Today I want to review a book that not only won the Pulitzer Prize for Narrative in 1961 but also originated a film adaptation with the same name in 1962. The book in question is "To Kill a Mocking Bird" written by Harper Lee, also awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President George W. Bush. I confess to having seen the film "to kill a mocking bird" many years ago, that also a classic awarded with at least 3 Oscar awards as well as many other awards, and I was deeply moved and impressed by the story and by the way it was described and depicted a case of pure racism. The film is particularly impressive, but so is the book and being narrated from a child's point of view, the ugliness and malice of the people gets to the reader even more. Despite the topic, this book can be read easily and is fluent because it is very well written, with as much talent as if it were a work of art. The characters are described with the right care to allow us imagine them before our eyes without getting bored or tired. The main characters of this book are: Jean Louise Finch (Scout) who represents the writer, a rebellious and stubborn girl, her father Atticus Finch, a widower and a lawyer who works with a lot of heart tries to educate his children to look for the truth and respect ethics and his brother Jem Finch who greatly admires his father and lives with fervor and passion the cases the latter deals. I must also mention Tom Robinson, a black man laborer, hard worker, husband and father of a beautiful family who is accused of sexual assault by Mayella Ewell, a white girl, alone and marginalized by society and her father, Bob Ewell, a true pariah of the society, a villain and a crook, a man who hates to work, disrespects anyone and inculcates his own values to his many sons and daughters. Other crucial characters in this book are: Maudie Atkinson, a true voice of reason that delights us with her thoughtful reflections and well thought out phrases (which probably represents the writer as an adult), Calpurnia, a black the cook with the Finch family, the only mother figure that Scout has ever had and who loves these children as if they were her own, and Dill Harris, Scout's and Jem's childhood friend who instigates their adventures and spurs their creativity. I read somewhere that Dill depicts Truman Capote, a friend of Harper Lee's entire life and famous for writing Tiffany's Breakfast and Cold Blood novels. I can't finish the description of the characters without talking about Boo Radley, also a victim of society and of his family too. For almost the entire duration of the book we learn of its existence only from the ventures of the three friends, Scout, Jem and Dill but in the end it turns out to be a real surprise. His altruism will finally serve to awaken a dull society and reset the balance.
I believe that by presenting these characters to you I have partially revealed the plot of this novel, but I hope that you will want to read this book all the same. You already know that I don't like spoilers and when it comes to a book so appreciated, I feel I have to give you enough details to arouse your interest.
Reading this book I was particularly struck by the metaphor of the blackbird, the title of the book in English is "to kill a mockingbird", that is killing a blackbird. In the Italian translation of this book we refer to this species only from the point of view of one of the categories that are part of this specie, namely the turids, in particular the blackbird. The blackbird is a bird that lives in pairs and feeds on fruit and above all insects. It is hunted incautiously and carelessly for the small damages that it could bring to the orchards without considering the great benefits that the man and the fruit trees have from the fact that this bird feeds on harmful insects. The blackbird has a very beautiful song, cheerful, lively, a true symphony. Atticus, reiterates several times that killing an animal that is useful as it is pleasant, was a sin, a real shame. The translation of the title into Italian, "the darkness beyond the hedge" is another metaphor. The hedge separates the house of the Finch from that of the Radleys and the darkness represents the unknown and the fear that generates the prejudice. But unlike children who defeat fear and prejudice, adults can't do it just as easily. I hope you will have the opportunity to read the book so that we can confront and exchange opinions.
