La nostra forza ai tempi dell'epidemia / Our strenght in time of Epidemics

Carissimi lettori,
Come state vivendo questi momenti?

ENGLISH

Dear readers,
Maybe this post will seem inappropriate at the moment and will generate anger because Easter is upon us and we are always prisoners in our homes but how are you experiencing these moments of isolation caused by the Covid-19 epidemic? Someone will tell me that he is not in isolation because he has to go to work anyway, even I have done it and I will do it again but even if we have those moments when we can go out and come back from work, isolation suffocates our leisure time as a snake suffocates the poor frog when swallowing it. We must therefore find ways to keep alive our desire to live, to feel, to see, to rejoice. The easiest way to do it is to pay attention to our hobbies, take advantage of these moments to write, cook, play chess, read, sing, play an instrument and write who knows, the next hit or dance alone and try all those strange moves that you would be ashamed to dare in front of other people. For example, I read, I've read books that maybe I would have not read after a busy day, books that need all my attention to grasp the messages and meanings behind every sentence and every metaphor. I chose to watch many films, comedies that made me laugh out loud, dramas that made me understand that what I am experiencing now is nothing compared to the big tragedies of life and that I can consider myself lucky for my little security bubble, action and suspense movies that made the blood in my veins rush and feel genuine shivers again. I took advantage of these moments to hear my parents, my family, my friends more often, to send messages and leave comments whenever I saw something beautiful or exciting and not only when I was bored because I was waiting for my turn to order in restaurants or to pay bills. I took the opportunity to search beauty in flowers, in simple landscapes that I can admire from my balcony, in other people's travel shots, in words, in music and why not, even in the foolish attempts to experiment with make-up. I took advantage of this crisis to hone my talent in the kitchen, invent new recipes and perfect those that had become routine, spend more time taking care of my body and face and also to do some gymnastics at home because it is important remember "mens sana in corpore sano". And this is precisely the purpose of my post, to help preserve the integrity of our psyche, to first of all take care of our person in all the appropriate ways so as not to fall prey to depression, sadness, and low self-esteem that the gloomy days, frustration, the absence of physical contact and economic worries could bring in our lives. We have the opportunity to devote so much attention to our being, find out what we want to do, ask ourselves about our path, the decisions we want to make and we should not waste in vain these moments earned also thanks to the hard work of some and the supreme sacrifice of many. We are obliged to all those who have lost their lives in this crisis to achieve something, to create, to ask ourselves who we are and what we want to do and why not, to live for them too ... What we do in these moments could and should also be a tribute to those less fortunate than us. So, let's not waste these days in a poisonous and suffocating indolence! Let’s channel our frustration and anger into something useful for society, for our person, for our loved ones and for those living next to us.
This crisis is a journey, it started with a slight attempt to rejoice at the fact that we would have stayed home a few days, then it went to the frustration generated by the fact that we can no longer do the usual things, to despair at the fact that it would not end soon to culminate with concerns about the aspect of a possible and future return. It is up to us to go through and overcome this situation as we did in the darkest moments of our existence, with confidence, perseverance and strength of character. It's up to us to understand how we want to spend this moment, in a heavy lethargy, suffocating anguish or personal growth.
How are you experiencing these moments? Tell me in your comments how you are facing the situation and what you have done to overcome it. I warmly embrace you and I trust your common sense to #stayathome and your strength to overcome the crisis like real warriors.

The name of the rose from my point of view

Carissimi lettori,

ENGLISH

Dear readers,
Today I'm back with a book review. The book I want to talk to you about today is The Name of the Rose, a famous book that also inspired an equally famous film with Sean Connery as William, the main character. I've been trying to structure this review in my mind for a long time but it's not easy to talk about a book by Umberto Eco.
This book is a masterful book, a monument of universal literature where every word is in the right place with a specific purpose. It is not an easy book to read because of its 500 pages, for the sentences in Latin, German and French, for the important historical content and for the vocabulary faithful to the period in question. In essence, the novel appears as a historical mystery book but is enriched with philosophical, religious and artistic content.
The novel begins with the story of a rediscovered manuscript that tells the story of a series of seemingly inexplicable assassins in a small Benedictine monastery in Piedmont populated by eccentric characters, secrets and painful mysteries. At the center of the story we have the library as a focal point for solving the mystery of the crimes which is the only place inaccessible to our investigating monks.
The key characters in this novel are the English Franciscan monk William of Baskerville, his pupil Adso da Melk who tells the story in his manuscript, Abbone da Fossanova, abbot of the monastery, Malachy of Hildesheim, the intransigent librarian who guards his books like a precious treasure, Jorge da Burgos, an elderly and blind monk and a great connoisseur of the secrets of the monastery, the herbalist Severino, Salvatore and Remigio, two ex-Dolcinian monks and finally the intransigent, cruel and arrogant inquisitor of the Dominican order, Bernardo Gui. Speaking of Bernardo Gui, although his role in solving crimes is practically non-existent, this character is fundamental in illustrating the religious torment of the time. I confess that I don't know much about the history of the Catholic Church and, reading this book, I immediately wanted to know more.
The theological and philosophical considerations listed in this book are both illuminating and terrifying, innovative and witless. The central thread that animates the discussions and the differences of our characters is the passion, the fervor and the blind conviction of being right.
In this novel Umberto Eco has constructed a very rare, intricate universe, realized on different levels of reading and reflection. This novel is a good thriller, a good historical novel, a good philosophical book and a good treaty on religions. I do not intend to spoil and show or suggest the ending because anyone who intends to read this book deserves to experience the intensity of an epic finale.
I recommend this book for the accuracy of historical information, the great work of documentation, the quality of the dialogues, the unique, singular and fascinating characters, the accurate descriptions and the philosophical reflections.
As a conclusion I just want to say that reading this book was one of the most lived decisions of my life, it enriched me culturally and personally at a level that will not be easily reachable again in future.

Musica per il cuore, musica per me / Music for the soul, music for me

Carissimi lettori,

Dear readers,Today I would like to talk about the things we like, the things that keep our blood running faster and makes us feel alive. I like many things but today I will only talk about music. Music relaxes me, calms me down, makes me happy or euphoric in function of the circumstances. I recently discovered a singer, I don't want to talk about the way I discovered him because it doesn't matter and I don't want to advertise music talent shows and even though I was pleasantly surprised by his performance in this contest, I was much more surprised and pleasantly impressed by his performance outside this competition.
What do you usually do when you like something or have something keep running your blood faster? Do you talk to your friends? Do you talk to your colleagues? Do you share it in your story on facebook and instagram? Well, I decided to talk about it on my blog and share it with my beloved readers. This is how I decided not to keep everything for myself and share what I like with you, my readers. I will share with you the videos that impressed me the most, they are all covers, videos uploaded on youtube and some of these covers have been much appreciated by singers who originally sang them as is the case with Fallin' that Alicia Keys in one of her posts on Instagram included it among her 10 most liked covers.
I was struck by the voice, I confess that I am one who has always appreciated the raucous voices in the singers, the intonation and the passion that this young artist puts into his singing. If you want to get to know me better through the things I like and appreciate or if you like music and want to listen to a young Italian singer (who sings in Italian, English and French) I invite you to listen and watch videos that I will share in my post.
I embrace you, I greet you and I wait for you next time!

Nicola Cavallaro - Fallin' -  cover Alicia Keys

Nicola Cavallaro - All of me - cover John Legend

Nicola Cavallaro - Human - cover Rag'n 'Bone Man

1984 by George Orwell - book review / recensione del libro / recenzie de carte

Dragi cititori,
Desigur, el isi imagina aceste actiuni in 1984 intr-o lume impartita in 3 puteri mondiale mereu in conflict si intr-o Londra comunista in care Ministerul Adevarului prin intermediul Psihopolitiei teroriza cetatenii.

ENGLISH

Dear readers,
Today I come back with a post on literature, on a book that has arroused my interest as soon as I read the description and it did not disappoint me at all. I also recommend this book to all serious literary readers because this book is a cornerstone of international literature. The book is called 1984 (the year of my birth: P) and the author is George Orwell, although I think I have to inform you that it is just the pseudonym used for the publication, the true name of the writer being Eric Arthur Blair, an anglo-indian writer, born in 1903 at Motihari in Bengal. After serving in the imperial army, experience that has traumatized him, the author decides to emigrate to Europe to discover his origins. In Europe, he participates in numerous revolts, he enrolls to the Communist Party of Spain, and when he was denied the participation in World War II because of a previous accident, he joined the Home Guard territorial militia in 1940, collaborating with various magazines and newspapers of Propaganda, living experiences that we can find in his main novel 1984. The 1984 novel was written between 1946 and 1949, a year later the writer dies at London, probably due to tuberculosis. 1984 is a futuristic novel that has been surprising since the first pages thanks to the writer's great ability to predict the future and what humanity is experiencing today. Of course, he is imagining these actions in 1984 in a world divided between three world powers in conflict and a communist London where the Ministry of Truth through Psychopolice terrorizes the citizens. Although London has never been under Communist influence, anyone who has lived in a communist state in the past can not but recognize the techniques the militias used to terrorize and spy on people, the rationing policy of food and not only, and also the propaganda and the media falsification the party used to manipulate the citizens. Leaving aside the Communist sphere for a moment, this novel has surprised me by the ability with which the author has anticipated the moments we actually live today, from the Big Brother, the supreme entity that spies any activity from what a person writes to what she thinks, the device used by individuals to tell the computer what to write, the lack of privacy, the techniques of manipulating and falsifying events and the media, the techniques of espionage through electronic devices that the individual possesses, the politics of beffudling the population with television programs and the way in which language evolved, giving up complex and meaningful words for more practical but limited words. The characters of this novel predict that the language will evolve so that all the great literary works will be rewritten to be understood by contemporaries taking enormous distances from the original form, purpose and meaning. The book is especially impressive by the party's logo: War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is force, but also for the hour of hatred, in which people were encouraged to show hatred and rage in a vehemently way against the enemy with which Oceania was at war at the moment so that they could exteriorize the internal conflicts caused by shortages, grievances, and silent revolts. The author describes a wilde society, such as the one in Middle Ages, where people assisted at executions for recreational purposes, which is not far from what society is today with the exaltation in front of the news that bombing on hostile nations has caused many deaths among innocent civilians. A society in which thought no longer exists because thinking becomes superfluous, memory is abolished by manipulation techniques, the people being left only with the conflicting feeling that something is missing and that they are being defrauded, is easily observable also in what we now live and constitutes in the end a sort of universal truth. As for the protagonist, Winston Smith, I have to say that from the start I did not like him particularly and with the advancement of reading I liked him less and less. I found him an egoistic character in his relationship with his mother and sister, misogynist because of the way he sees and judges women, and even when he had the confirmation that his ideas were wrong he was still a bit uncertain and hesitant in front of an unexpected feeling of love. Winston Smith feels comfortable with the idea that something striking must be done, that he has to overturn the party by associating himself in this purpose with a secret revolutionary movement that asks him to sacrifice his life, the lives of the persons dear to him, to kill innocent people for the good of the movement, to lie, to distribute drugs, encourage prostitution, corrupt the minds of children, and renounce to his identity without any certainty except that death would be certain. All of these things are seen from another point of view by the other protagonist, Julia, a young member of the party and the Anti-Sex League, who hated the party politics with all her strength and who falls in love with Winston and joins his struggle to overthrow the party, although her point of view is more pragmatic, being interested in what she can actually have in hand, in the benefits, and not engaging in fights or idealism without a secure base. Faced with the question whether they are willing to separate and never see eachother again if the interests of the movement so require, she categorically answers NO while he is undecided and then in the end, perhaps to confirm the professed love, but not fully lived, he also replies no. Julia is indifferent to the Goldstein character that would be the origin of this movement and the book he had written to motivate the rebellion against the system, probably thanks to her pragmatic spirit or perhaps because of the feeling that this movement is false, being she an active member of the party and knowing better than him the subterfuges that this one uses to get what it wants. Winston is an idealist and even faced with torture after his capture he clings to the idea of truth and love to which he renounces when confronted with his most terrible fear. Party domination technique is not imposed only through torture, O'Brien, a party's main member warns Winston that what is not possible with torture will be obtained through humiliation and reward, the latter working in Winston case. In the final scene between the two after the release of the party's clutches, both characters are deeply transformed by this event, but Julia is the only one to verbalize the concreteness of the acts committed in order to save her life, that is betrayal, Winston remaining in the idealistic plan until the final scene that I confess I try to chew to understand it better or to better understand the psychological scheme that is at its base. In conclusion, I just want to recommend this book, do not take it as a light book because it is not at all, it is advisable to be psychologically prepared for that reading from which you will certainly emerge culturally and personally enriched, I at least this is how I lived this reading. The novel is full of sarcasm and irony, as the Ministry of Truth is responsible for falsifying the reality and events, the Ministry of Abundance deals with rations of food and other products, the Ministry of Peace deals with the War, and the Ministry of Love is charged with the espionage and torture of citizens. You will find that I have found myself in this book because of my life experience, having grown up in a country under the communist regime, and you are not mistaken because precisely because of this I can confirm that all that is described here as party techniques is reality and certainly this was a decisive factor in choosing this book. For those who have not experienced such an experience, these things may seem incredible and it is also for a scientific purpose that I recommend this reading. I recommend this reading mainly because we are homo sapiens sapiens and we must learn to detect the means of manipulation with which we are bombarded from morning to night and above all hoping to avoid what the author of this book predicts as a future for humanity.
