Nel post di oggi recensirò il romanzo Bonjour tristesse della nota scrittrice Françoise Sagan, pseudonimo di Françoise Quoirez. Per coloro che non hanno letto nessuno dei suoi libri vorrei prima ragguagliarvi su chi era questa scrittrice e su come diventò celebre in tutto il mondo. Nata in una famiglia di ricchi imprenditori (che verrà ripresa e usata come sfondo praticamente in tutti i suoi romanzi) e avida lettrice dei romanzi di Marcel Proust nel quale troverà ispirazione per la scelta del suo pseudonimo, principessa Sagan, Françoise trova il suo posto nel nuovo movimento letterario degli ussari che diventa popolare nella Francia dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Opponendosi all’esistenzialismo e alla scrittura impegnativa di Sartre principalmente, questo corrente tratta con cinismo e leggerezza la vita mondana. Un aspetto molto importante di questo corrente che Sagan ha fatto suo sin dal primo romanzo è l’erotismo. Bonjour tristesse è il primo romanzo di Françoise Sagan e ha da subito un gran successo garantendo alla sua autrice una fama inaspettata. Al giorno d’oggi questo romanzo non farebbe clamore ma negli anni ’50 parlare di sesso, di ragazze adolescenti e relazioni promiscue, era sufficiente per attirare la disapprovazione del Vaticano e perciò l’interesse della società mondana.

I personaggi principali di questo romanzo sono Cecile una giovane ragazza svogliata, suo padre Raymond un imprenditore vedovo, Cyril, un giovane ragazzo affascinante di origini modeste, Elsa, la giovane amante di Raymond, ed Anne, amica della famiglia. L’azione del romanzo si sviluppa sulla costa azzurra dove Raymond, Cecile ed Elsa passano una vacanza estiva tra ricevimenti mondani, feste, spiagge e la mancanza di preoccupazioni. Presto gli raggiunge anche Anne, donna educata, raffinata e sofisticata, amica della madre deceduta di Cecile e futuro interesse amoroso di Raymond. Il suo arrivo scatena una serie di eventi che porteranno ad un finale degno del titolo di questo libro. Il finale sembrava prevedibile a momenti ma sono stata felicemente sorpresa del fatto che non lo è stato il che ha reso la lettura più piacevole. L’unico elemento che svelo in merito al finale è il fatto che sarà primordiale nella formazione della giovane Cecile e i fatti relativi al futuro di questa giovane donna sono interamente riconducibili al finale di questo romanzo e alle vicende e decisioni che condussero a questo epilogo. Il romanzo e gli eventi narrati coprono la durata di un’estate e nonostante si soffermino ad attività frivole, il punto forte di questo romanzo sono i momenti di introspezione, magistralmente catturati e descritti da una giovane diciannovenne al suo debutto. Confesso che ho apprezzato Bonjour tristesse molto più di qualsiasi altro suo romanzo che io abbia letto. La sua penna è leggera, la narrazione fluida, arricchita occasionalmente da elementi di filosofia senza diventare petulante e tediosa come purtroppo accadrà in futuro in alcuni casi. L’influenza di Proust si sente nella descrizione dei processi interiori legati soprattutto ai ricordi e ai sentimenti, con piccole incursioni nella memoria dove la virtù lascia il posto al vizio e all’ozio.

Con le sue 150 pagine, Bonjour tristesse è una lettura piacevole, ricreativa e rilassante, perfetta per una giornata di spiaggia o per le serate opprimenti in cui si è alla ricerca di momenti di svago e relax, nonostante il finale triste.

In today's post I shall review the novel Bonjour tristesse by the well-known writer Françoise Sagan, pseudonym of Françoise Quoirez. For those who haven't read any of her books I would first like to tell you a few things about who this writer was and how she became famous all over the world. Born into a family of wealthy entrepreneurs (which will be described and used as a background in virtually all of her novels) and an avid reader of Marcel Proust's novels in which she will find inspiration for the choice of her pseudonym, Princess Sagan, Françoise finds her place in the new literary movement of the hussars which becomes popular in France after the Second World War. Opposing existentialism and Sartre's demanding writing mainly, this movement treats worldly life with cynicism and lightness. A very important aspect of this current that Sagan has made of her since the first novel is eroticism. Bonjour tristesse is the first novel by Françoise Sagan and was immediately a great success, guaranteeing its author unexpected fame. Nowadays this novel would not be a sensation but in the 1950s talking about sex, teenage girls and promiscuous relationships was enough to attract the disapproval of the Vatican and therefore the interest of the mundane society.

The main characters of this novel are Cecile, a listless young girl, her father Raymond, a widowed businessman, Cyril, a charming young boy of modest origins, Elsa, Raymond's young lover, and Anne, a friend of the family. The action of the novel develops on the French Riviera where Raymond, Cecile and Elsa spend a summer vacation between social receptions, parties, beaches and absence of worries. Soon Anne, an educated, refined and sophisticated woman, friend of Cecile's deceased mother and future love interest of Raymond, joins them. Her arrival sets off a series of events that will lead to an ending worthy of the title of this book. The end seemed predictable at times but I was happily surprised that it wasn't, which made this novel a more enjoyable read. The only element I reveal about the ending is the fact that it will be primordial in the formation of the young Cecile and the facts relating to the future of this young woman are entirely attributable to the ending of this novel and to the events and decisions that led to this epilogue. The novel and the narrated events cover the period of a summer and although they dwell on frivolous activities, the strong point of this novel are the moments of introspection, masterfully captured and described by a young nineteenth year old at her debut work. I confess that I enjoyed Bonjour tristesse much more than any other novel by her that I have read. Her pen is light, the narrative fluid, occasionally enriched by elements of philosophy without becoming petulant and tedious as unfortunately will happen in some cases in her future works. Proust's influence is felt in the description of inner processes connected especially to memories and feelings with small incursions into memories where virtue steps aside in front of vice and idleness.

With its 150 pages, Bonjour tristesse is a pleasant, recreational and relaxing read, perfect for a day at the beach or for oppressive evenings in which one is looking for moments of leisure and relaxation nonetheless the sad ending.

Il letto disfatto di Françoise Sagan - recensione letteraria / The unmade bed by Françoise Sagan - book review

Oggi vorrei recensire un libro. Purtroppo non riesco sempre a recensire i libri subito averli letti almeno che non fossero libri a forte impatto e quindi per tutti gli altri libri, passa un po’ di tempo da quando vengono letti fino a quando riesco a recensirli. Il libro che recensirò oggi è “Il letto disfatto” di Françoise Sagan, un romanzo che parla d’amore, sogni, vita, piacere, dolore, perdita e sofferenza analizzando da un punto di vista strutturale le molle, le dimensioni e l’intensità. Il titolo originale è “Le lit défait” uscito in Francia nel 1977 e pubblicato in Italia nello stesso anno dalla casa editrice Mondadori. Il libro che ho letto io è stato pubblicato nel dicembre 1978 presso la Nuova Stampa Mondadori e l’ho comprato in una fiera dell'antiquariato.

I personaggi principali sono Béatrice Valmont, una bellissima attrice, famosa per le sue storie d’amore quanto per la sua bravura e il giovane e promettente commediografo Edouard Maligrasse. Lo scenario è un mondo cosmopolito, frivolo e sostanzialmente solitario del teatro parigino degli anni ’70 in cui dive e primedonne autoreferianziali e avide di applausi vivono il loro sogno di clamore fra amori effimeri, amici utili e solitudine personale. In questo mondo entra Edouard, talentuoso e allo stesso tempo fragile, alla ricerca della sua dea, Beatrice. I due avevano già avuto dei trascorsi che non si erano finalizzati nel modo desiderato per Edouard ma questo non le impedisce di sperare nell’amore di Beatrice. Altri personaggi degni di considerazione sono Tony d’Albret, la cinica, spietata e sagace impresaria, complice e critica delle avventure di Beatrice e André Jolyet, uomo di teatro culto, affascinante, raffinato ma morente a causa di un cancro che lo rende più riflessivo ed empatico. Confesso che Jolyet è l’unico personaggio amante di Beatrice che mi fosse rimasto impresso nella mente, il resto sono solo una mandria di maschi con tratti simili che servono solo a procurare piacere a Beatrice. Stento a ricordare distintamente Nicolas, Basil, Raol o Cyril, l’unico motivo per cui vengono nominati è per illustrare le avventure e i tradimenti di Beatrice. Una critica che avrei voluto fare alla scrittrice è che in questo romanzo si è dedicata troppo alla creazione del personaggio di Beatrice e ha trascurato i personaggi non principali. Abbiamo anche un netto sbilancio fra i personaggi maschili e quelli femminili sia numerica sia come spessore caratteriale. Mentre i personaggi maschili sono in superiorità numerica, i personaggi femminili sono caratterialmente descritti meglio e hanno più spessore. Personaggi come Beatrice, Edouard e Tony ricevono più spazio all’interno del romanzo e sono implicitamente strutturati meglio mentre personaggi come Cyril, Kurt, Raoul o Basil vengono menzionati solo in rapporto ai personaggi principali. È palese che Béatrice fosse una persona egoista, sfrontata, ambiziosa e infedele ma dai suoi monologhi interiori magistralmente descritti dall’autrice possiamo scoprire anche una Béatrice passionale, compassionevole e fedele a se stessa come persona. Edouard invece cerca in un modo masochista di farsi amare ed è disposto a perdonare tutto purché la donna che ama torni sempre da lui. Ho avuto la netta sensazione che il suo successo fosse dovuto almeno in parte anche alle disavventure con Beatrice e che la sofferenza lo abbia reso uno scrittore migliore. Ecco perché mi sorge spontaneo l’interrogativo su cos’altro sta dietro al suo masochismo e al suo desiderio di perdonare Beatrice.

Per sintetizzare, questo romanzo non è altro che un balletto di storie d’amore, desideri, tradimenti, passioni e promesse infrante. Ho apprezzato il tempo che l’autrice ha preso per analizzare le diverse sfaccettature di ogni singolo nuovo sentimento e il modo in cui ha descritto il suo integrarsi nella rete intricata dei rapporti fra personaggi e le loro aspirazioni. Ho apprezzato anche l’attenzione che la scrittrice attribuisce all’universo dei rapporti femminili, rapporti di concorrenza, invidia, reticenza ma anche di fiducia catturati magistralmente in frasi come: “antica camerateria femminile […] ferocia e il disprezzo reciproci”.

Vorrei dire solo una cosa sul finale di questo romanzo e anche se non mi piace fare gli spoiler, e questo non lo sarà, vorrei solo dire che speravo finisse in un modo diverso. Dal mio punto di vista, certe storie e certi romanzi, per la loro complessità si meritano un finale notevole, memorabile e la storia di Beatrice e di Edouard era una di quelle storie. Non dico che il finale non sia impressionante, lo è ma, credo che sia soprattutto un finale molto probabile e comune.

In conclusione ho gradito leggere questo libro, non lo reputo un romanzo importante oppure un romanzo che mi abbia fatto riflettere su certi valori, eventi o aspetti della vita ma è comunque un romanzo scritto molto bene, un romanzo degno di essere letto prima o poi, meglio durante le vacanze. Io lo includerei nella categoria romanzi rosa, romanzi rosa di alta classe e come tale dovrebbe essere considerato cardine e pietra miliare di questo tipo di letteratura.

Today I would like to review a book. Unfortunately, I can't always review the books right after reading them unless they were of high impact and therefore for all the other books, it takes me some time from when I read them until I can make the reviews. The book I will review today is "The Unmade Bed" by Françoise Sagan, a novel that talks about love, dreams, life, pleasure, pain, loss and suffering by analyzing from a structural point of view its springs, dimensions and intensity. The original title is "Le lit défait" which was released in France in 1977 and published in Italy in the same year by the Mondadori publishing house. The book I read was published in December 1978 at the Nuova Stampa Mondadori and I bought it at an antiques fair.

The main characters are Béatrice Valmont, a beautiful actress, famous for her love stories as for her acting talent and the young and promising playwright Edouard Maligrasse. The scenario is a cosmopolitan, frivolous and substantially solitary world of the Parisian theater of the 70s in which self-referential and eager for applause divas and leading ladies  live their dream of clamor among ephemeral loves, useful friends and personal solitude. Edouard, talented and at the same time fragile man, enters this world in search of his goddess, Beatrice. The two had already had a history that had not been finalized in the way Edouard desidered it, but this does not stop him from wishing Beatrice's love. Other characters worthy of consideration are Tony d'Albret, the cynical, ruthless and sagacious entrepreneur, accomplice and critic of the adventures of Beatrice and André Jolyet, a cult theater man, charming, refined but dying due to a cancer that makes him more reflective and empathetic. I confess that Jolyet is the only Beatrice's lover character  that had stuck in my mind, the rest are just a herd of males with similar traits that only serve to bring pleasure to Beatrice. I can hardly remember Nicolas, Basil, Raol or Cyril distinctly, the only reason they are named is to illustrate Beatrice's adventures and betrayals.

One criticism that I would have liked to make to the writer is that in this novel she dedicated too much attention to the creation of the character of Beatrice and neglected the non-main characters. We also have a clear imbalance between male and female characters both numerically and in terms of characterial depth. While male characters are numerically superior, female characters are characteristically better described and have more depth. Characters like Beatrice, Edouard and Tony receive more space within the novel and are implicitly better structured while characters like Cyril, Kurt, Raoul or Basil are mentioned only in relation to the main characters. It is clear that Béatrice was a selfish, bold, ambitious and unfaithful person but from her inner monologues masterfully described by the author we can also discover a passionate, faithful to herself and compassionate person. Edouard instead tries in a masochistic way to make himself loved and is willing to forgive everything as long as the woman he loves always comes back to him. I had the distinct feeling that his success was at least partly due to the misadventures with Beatrice and that suffering made him a better writer. That's why the question arises spontaneously on what else lies behind his masochism and his desire to forgive Beatrice.

To summarize, this novel is nothing more than a ballet of love stories, desires, betrayals, passions and broken promises. I appreciated the time the author took to analyze the different facets of each single new feeling and the way in which she described its integration into the intricate network of relationships between characters and their aspirations. I also appreciated the attention that the writer attributes to the universe of female interrelations, bonds of competition, envy, reticence but also of trust are masterfully captured in phrases such as: "ancient female camaraderie [...] ferocity and mutual contempt".

I would like to say only one thing about the ending of this novel and even if I don't like to do spoilers, and this won't be one, I only want to say that I hoped it would have ended in a different way. From my point of view, certain stories and certain novels, due to their complexity, deserve a remarkable, memorable ending and the story of Beatrice and Edouard was one of those stories. I am not saying that the ending is not impressive, it is, but I think it is above all a very probable and common ending.

In conclusion I enjoyed reading this book, I do not consider it an important novel or a novel that made me reflect on certain values, events or aspects of life but it is still a well written novel, a novel worthy of being read sooner or later, better in holydays. I would include it in the category of romance novels, high-class romance novels and as such, should be considered cornerstone and milestone of this type of literature.
