Dear readers, today is International Women's Day, and given the occasion, I've decided to talk to you about some women who have made history. I'm not referring to personalities who have contributed to historic events such as queens, warriors, or activists, but, since one of the criteria by which society is organized is international recognition and awards, today I'll talk to you about women who have stood out and who have been honored with prizes such as the Nobel Prize or the Pulitzer Prize for groundbreaking discoveries, the fruit of hard work and undeniable talent.

Women who have received a Nobel Prize in Science:

Marie Curie, born Maria Salomea Skłodowska, who retained both surnames after her marriage, was the first woman ever and only woman to receive two Nobel Prizes in two different disciplines, in 1903 for Physics and in 1911 for Chemistry. Born in Poland, Marie studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she also taught. Her eldest daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, followed in her mother's footsteps and was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. Given the historical moment we live in, I would like to bring to your attention some of the quotes Marie Curie uttered regarding her work in the field of radiation: "Humanity needs practical persons, who get the most out of their work and, without forgetting the general good, protect their own interests" and "If our discovery has a commercial future, it is a circumstance from which we should not profit. If radium is used in the treatment of disease, it is impossible for us to profit from it."

Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1964 for her discoveries in X-ray crystallography, was the first to receive the Nobel Prize. Her discoveries in the field of chemistry included the determination of biomolecules such as cholesterol (1937), penicillin (1945), vitamin B12 (1954, which actually earned her the Nobel Prize), insulin (1969), lactoglobulin, ferritin, and vitamin D3. Furthermore, between 1942 and 1949, she achieved one of the most coveted achievements of her time: determining the structure of the first known antibiotic, penicillin.

Rita Levi-Montalcini (1986, Medicine), the first Italian woman to win a Nobel Prize in science for her discovery of Nerve Growth Factor. I know her discoveries have been instrumental in research on cancer, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's, and I only hope that one day, building on her discoveries, someone will discover cures for MS and ALS. Throughout her long life, she received numerous awards and honorary degrees, but her work was not only important in medicine but also in the fight for gender equality. In this regard, I would like to share with you some of her reflections on this matter: "Humanity is made up of men and women and must be represented by both sexes."

Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna are two other women who have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 2020, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for their development of CRISPR-Cas9 technology, a revolutionary method of genome editing known as "molecular scissors." This technique allows the DNA of microorganisms, plants, and animals to be modified with great precision, speed, and low cost, transforming genetic research and opening new avenues for therapies against hereditary diseases and cancer.

I wanted to talk about these women to raise awareness of the inestimable value their work has brought to the progress of science and society. We know all this and will know so much more thanks to the fact that these women chose to deploy their ingenuity so that we could all live a more peaceful, longer, easier, and better life than they did. I don't know about you, but I can't help but wonder what our lives would be like without all these discoveries...

Women who have received the Nobel Prize in Literature:

Grazia Deledda: the first and only Italian to receive a Nobel Prize for her prose, which portrays life in Sardinia.

Toni Morrison: the first African-American woman to receive such an award, she gave voice to the experience of black women, metaphorically describing the barbarities of slavery and racial discrimination.

Herta Müller: Romanian-born German writer and poet, known for her works on the communist dictatorship.

Svjatlana Aleksievič: Ukrainian-Belarusian journalist known for her documentary prose denouncing the atrocities of World War II, the political regime in the former USSR, and the conflicts that still affect those territories.

Another woman I'd like to talk to you about, even though she didn't win a Nobel Prize in Literature, is Harper Lee. This writer is famous for her novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," which won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, with the citation: "It has influenced the character of our country for the better. It has been a gift to the world. As a model of good writing and human sensitivity, this book will be read and studied forever."

There are many other women who have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, but I wanted to tell you about the ones I've read in recent years. I've reviewed several books by these wonderful women and published several posts about them, so if you'd like to brush up on and familiarize yourself with their writing, just type their names in the search box on the right.

Each of these people was, first and foremost, a normal woman, and their hard work is a source of pride for each of us. Today, we can remember all of them, the women mentioned above and all the other women I haven't mentioned today because perhaps I don't know them, but who I will surely be proud to do so one day, because the greatest gift we can give ourselves on this day is to be happy and proud to be women.

La volpe era già il cacciatore di Herta Muller - recensione libro / Inca de pe atunci vulpea era vanatorul de Herta Muller - recenzie de carte / The fox was already the hunter - book review

LIMBA ROMANA

Salutare dragi cititori,

“Inca de pe atunci vulpea era vanatorul” a fost publicata pentru prima data in Germania, in 1992. In 1993 apare ecranizarea acestui roman, filmul in limba romana, “Vulpe – Vanator” o coproductie romano – germana regizat de Stere Gulea dupa scenariul Hertei Muller. Eu am citit acest roman in limba italiana, versiune publicata de editura Feltrinelli in 2020.

Hello dear readers,

I am very happy to talk to you today about an extraordinary book that has a little known and not so digested topic by today's society. I don't think I've ever been so enthusiastic about a reading, or at least the last time I remember a similar feeling was when I read Primo Levi's book, "If This Is a Man". The book I want to talk to you about today is entitled "The fox was already the hunter" by the writer Herta Muller.

First of all, I would like to talk a little about the author, who is not a well-known writer. Herta Muller was born into a German minority family on August 17, 1953 in the German-speaking village of Nitchidorf in Timis County, Romania, a region on Romania's border with Serbia and Hungary. During the Second World War, in the period in which Romania was fighting on the Axis side, together with Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, imperialist Japan, Hungary and Finland, his father served in the troops of the Waffen-SS. After the moment in which Romania turned arms against the Axis and sided with the Allies, passing into the sphere of influence of Soviet Russia, the new regime deported in January 1945 all German-speaking Romanians aged between 17 and 45 years old, in forced labor camps in Ukraine. Among these people was also the mother of the writer. Herta Muller studied and graduated in Romanian and German literature at the University of Timisoara. She started working for an engineering company as a Romanian-German translator, from where she was fired because she opposed collaboration with the Securitate, the Romanian secret services during the communist regime. She later worked in a factory and as an educator in a German-speaking kindergarten. In her writings, Herta Muller describes the living conditions and oppressions during the communist regime under Nicolae Ceausescu. In 1982 she published her first book, "Nadirs" which unfortunately only comes out in a censored form in Romania. The uncensored version is published in Germany a few years later. In 1987, after countless persecutions by the Securitate, she left Romania and settled in Berlin with her husband, Richard Wagner. Here she receives various proposals for a university chair, and thus her professional career evolves from a kindergarten educator in Romania to a university professor in Germany. In the following years he published various works, novels, poems, essays, awarded countless times and among them, in 2009 with the Nobel Prize for Literature with the motivation: "with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed".

After this long presentation of the writer, I will move on to the book review. "The fox was ever the hunter" was first published in Germany in 1992. In 1993 the screening of this novel, the Romanian film "Fox - Hunter", a Romanian-German co-production directed by Stere Gulea on the screenplay by Herta, appeared. Muller. I read this novel in Italian, a version published by Feltrinelli in 2020. Reading this novel in Italian, I enjoyed and was stimulated to find the Romanian songs and texts to which the writer was referring because the book, as I mentioned earlier,  was written in German, then underwent a first translation, and subsequently from German into Italian, a subsequent translation. Leaving aside these clarifications, I would like to proceed with the review itself. In this novel are described the lives of young people in the period immediately preceding the 1989 revolution, and through the prism of these characters the Romanian society of that period is analyzed. The main characters are: Adina, a young, independent and courageous teacher who does not want to collaborate or have anything to do with the Securitate and its acolytes, Paul, doctor and friend of Adina who sings the songs forbidden by the Securitate, Albert, who friends call Abi, also a young man outraged by the situation of society and who undergoes the unfair interrogations of the Securitate, Mara, seamstress and best friend of Adina, Liviu, a young man who has chosen to live and marry in a village, where political pressure is lighter, Ilije, Adina's fiancé, enlisted in the army in the plains of the south of the country where he dreams of swimming across the Danube every day and Pavel, secret service agent and source of psychological stress for Adina. If you don't mind, I allow myself to intertwine my memories with the elements of the review.

I confess I was almost 6 when the 1989 revolution broke out in Romania and although I was a child at the time, the shortcomings of those times remained engraved in my memory like scars. I remember the infernal queues for food, which I, as the eldest child, had to with my parents, queues for meat and sausages, queues for butter and milk, queues for legumes and vegetables, queues for bread, queues everywhere , queues that I made with a hat, a scarf and then an uncovered head in the hope that the saleswoman seeing my parents with "different" children, would have compassion and give them another half a kilo. My brother was a child and therefore could not be subjected to these tortures, and the grandparents were old, so I remained the only element that could be paraded in front of the clerks to arouse some pity and get the ration of the whole family. I vividly remember a time when after hours and hours of queuing for meat and sausages, I couldn't stand up and begged my dad to come home because I couldn't queue anymore. When we got home, a neighbor came to tell us that the goods had finally arrived and that the miracle was over immediately. In this context, I remember the response of my father who, hearing the news, scolded me, because if I had resisted for a few more minutes, we would have eaten too.

I remember very well when the electricity was turned off in the evening, I remember well that the bread was marked on a card, half a loaf for each member of the family and I remember even better how at closing time, the cops and the clerks went back home with bags full of goods. I remember wondering why they were entitled to more bread, did they have a bigger stomach? All these shortcomings are majestically described by Herta Muller in this book about counted bread, sidewalks and hunger games. Herta Muller in his book, makes the same remark about the gap between ordinary people and some members of communist society when talking about access to food and products when she narrates how Paul, one of the characters in the novel and a Securitate agent, came home loaded with coffee, Nutella, cigarettes, margarine, veal, chocolate and Chanel perfumes. Since Paul was who he was, he allowed himself to have mistresses to whom he gave countless gifts, and we're not just talking about food, but also clothes, jewelry, branded perfumes, lipsticks and makeup.

I would like to mention the skill and sophistication with which Herta Muller talks about the moments when "the power goes out". "When there is no electricity in the dark city, the night rises from the ground and cuts off legs first". To survive these shortcomings, every house is equipped with flashlights, the hands at night become torches but unfortunately their light is not enough to see and only serves to make you "feel comfortable that the night will not devour you completely, but only halfway" . At a time when people were dying in workplace accidents due to lack of adequate equipment, the leaders in complicity with militiamen and secret agents poured brandy on the neck of the dead to classify the accident as an act of negligence on the part of the worker. In this company, workers saved every penny and imposed even more restrictions on themselves to be able to afford a gold jewel without knowing that the person who had sold them the gold had also sold customer data to Securitate and that soon that jewel would have been brutally confiscated. In this society, the secret services entered the homes of citizens uninvited and left intimidating traces and in such a society what could not be stolen was prohibited, what shone, saw, near, there was always an ear that listened and only daylight could wake the dictator, the first comrade. In this book, the author describes the story of men who had women, women who had children and children who were hungry. In this book the writer majestically narrates the life of ordinary people who spoke little because they knew too much and paints with the strength of precision, the life of those who lived in the streets of power where even the wind was afraid to blow.

In this book, the writer throws a blinding, relentless and uncomfortable light, a 360-degree light on what was the communist society under the regime of Nicolae Ceausescu and for this reason her story is unique, it is important and you cannot miss it. Herta Muller's story hypnotizes, fascinates the reader through the power of words, facts and figures of speech. I think the most accurate way to define Herta Muller's writing is poetry in the form of prose. Please don't buy this book if you just want an easy reading to pass the time, read this book if you want to know, if you are hungry for knowledge!
