Viaggiare a Nizza - la mia città preferita / Travel to Nice - my favourite city

Ciao carissimi lettori,

Oggi voglio parlarvi di Nizza, una città romantica, una città bellissima e una città che ha conosciuto la bella vita ma anche la sofferenza. Ho visitato Nizza in diversi anni e confesso che l’ultima volta che l’ho vista, cioè a dicembre dell’anno scorso, ho notato un forte cambiamento, soprattutto nelle persone e nella loro accoglienza. Probabilmente è stato l’incidente terroristico del luglio del 2016 che ha fatto capire ai suoi cittadini che il mondo ha sofferto insieme a loro e ha provato il loro dolore ed è stato probabilmente anche la causa della presenza di quel enorme hastag #ILOVENICE. Francia e Nizza soprattutto, hanno capito che hanno bisogno della gente, del loro amore e quindi lo gridano fortemente in una lingua che non è la loro lingua ma che ha la particolarità di poter unire tutto il mondo. Ho notato questo soprattutto nella frequenza con la quale il personale di negozi, ristoranti e bar ti parlano subito in inglese non appena capiscono che sei un forestiero. Tutto questo mi aveva deluso un po’ perché io parlo il francese e anche se non lo faccio più da 20 anni quasi, cerco qualsiasi scusa per dare una spolverata alla lingua di Flaubert e di Balzac.

Hello my dear readers,

Today I want to talk to you about Nice, a romantic city, a beautiful city and a city that has known both the good life and the suffering. I visited Nice in several years and I confess that the last time I saw it, that is in December of last year, I noticed a strong change, especially in people and in their hospitality. It was probably the terrorist incident in July 2016 that made its citizens understand that the world suffered along with them and experienced their pain and was probably also the cause of the presence of that huge hastag #ILOVENICE. France and Nice above all, have understood that they need people, their love and therefore shout it loudly in a language that is not their language but that has the particularity of being able to unite the whole world. I noticed this especially in the frequency with which the staff of shops, restaurants and bars speak to you immediately in English as soon as they understand that you are a foreigner. All this had disappointed me a little because I speak French and even if I haven't done it for almost 20 years, I look for any excuse to give a dusting to the language of Flaubert and Balzac.

Cosa fare a Nizza mi chiederete? Beh, lasciatemi dire che non è per niente difficile. Potete sempre cominciare con una passeggiata sulla famosa Promenade des Anglais, il lungomare che si estende dal viale René Cassin e finisce nel giardino Alberto I nella vecchia città. Sicuramente avete già visto questo lungomare costeggiato dagli hotel più lussuosi della città in innumerevoli film, ma vi assicuro che la brezza marina costante di cui ci si può godere durante una passeggiata vi faranno desiderare ritornare ancora e ancora. Seduti su una di quelle tantissime panchine blu, ci si può osservare il bellissimo mare, azzurro, spumeggiante e frenetico. Se aspettate fino al calar del sole, il tramonto vi ripagherà con un’esplosione mai vista di colori come se il mare prendesse letteralmente fuoco.

What to do in Nice you may ask me? Well, let me tell you it's not difficult at all. You can always start with a walk on the famous Promenade des Anglais, the promenade that extends from the avenue René Cassin and ends in the Albert I garden in the old city. Surely you have already seen this promenade coasted by the most luxurious hotels in the city in countless films, but I assure you that the constant sea breeze that you can enjoy during a walk will make you want to come back again and again. Sitting on one of those many blue benches, you can see the beautiful blue, foamy and frantic sea. If you wait until sun down, the sunset will repay you with an explosion never seen before of colors as if the sea literally took fire.

Cosa visitare a Nizza oltre alla Promenade Des Anglais? Ci sono tantissimi posti e musei come l’Opéra de Nice, le Cathédrale Sainte Réparate, il Musée des Beaux Arts, il Musée Matisse, la Place (piazza) Massena illuminata di notte di sculture colorate come potete vedere anche nelle foto qui sotto oppure la Place Garibaldi, la più vecchia ed emblematica piazza della città, ritratta nelle foto qui sotto illuminata da schizzi d’acqua colorati. In inverno Nizza si riempie di colori e di luci e nella città vecchia e possibile ammirare, comprare, assaggiare le specialità per questa stagione come il “vin chaud” (vino caldo), “jus de pommes” (suco di mele caldo) o il “cidre” (sidro). Come potete vedere, io l’ho già fatto e vi assicuro che sono una delizia.

What to visit in Nice besides the Promenade Des Anglais? There are plenty of places and museums such as the Opéra de Nice, the Cathédrale Sainte Réparate, the Musée des Beaux Arts, the Musée Matisse, La Place (square) Massena illuminated by colored sculptures at night as you can also see in the photos below or La Place Garibaldi, the oldest and most emblematic square in the city, shown in the photos below illuminated by splashes of colored water. In winter Nice fills with colors and lights and in the old city it is possible to admire, buy and taste the specialties for this season such as the "vin chaud" (hot wine), "jus de pommes" (warm apple juice) or the "Cidre". As you can see, I have already done that and I can assure you that they are a true delight.

Già che ci siete, non dimenticatevi di assaggiare la loro cucina e non solo le specialità di cui avete sentito parlare molto spesso come la ratatoille o la salade niçoise ma anche la socca, che potete gustare anche ai mercatini o bar a prezzi molto bassi o le loro specialità di carne. I ristoranti sulla famosa Promenade des Anglais sono cari e hanno delle proposte abbastanza turistiche, se volete restare comunque vicino al centro perché lì trovate senza problemi parcheggio a pagamento, vi suggerisco di cercare e consultare anche tripadvisor o altri siti del genere per i piccoli ristoranti della vecchia città. Noi abbiamo trovato un delizioso, molto chic ed elegante ristorantino con pochi tavoli e piatti squisiti. Non sto collaborando con questo ristorante per questo post e quindi non vi dico il nome ma vi confesso che è stata una delle mie esperienze più gratificanti. Simile a questo ce ne sono decine di ristoranti, tutti molto accoglienti e decorati con tanto buon gusto e lusso come sono soliti fare i francesi.

While you're at it, don't forget to taste their cuisine and not just the specialties you have often heard of such as ratatoille or salade niçoise but also socca, which you can also enjoy at street markets or bars at very low prices or their meat specialties. The restaurants on the famous Promenade des Anglais are expensive and have mainly tourist menus, if you want to stay close to the center anyway because there you can find paid parking without problems, I suggest you look for and consult tripadvisor or other similar sites for small restaurants in the Old Town. We found a delightful, very chic and elegant restaurant with a few tables and exquisite dishes. I'm not collaborating with this restaurant for this post and so I won't tell you the name but I confess that it was one of the most rewarding experiencesI ever had. Similar to this, there are dozens of restaurants, all very welcoming and decorated with much good taste and luxury as the French are used to do.

Saint Tropez - c'est magnifique!

Cand auzim vorbind de Saint Tropez ne imaginam un oras cochet si in acelasi timp cosmopolit, plin de turisti si de imbarcatiuni de lux, o destinatie a elitei sociale. La sfarsitul lunii martie, cu ocazia zilei mele de nastere am facut o mica incursiune pe coasta de azur in Franta, v-am povestit ceva despre asta si luna trecuta, si prin orasele vizitate s-a numarat si Saint Tropez. Vreau sa va spun ca inainte de toate Saint Tropez este un oras mic, cochet cum ne asteptam dar nicidecum cosmopolit. In acea perioada turistii erau foarte rari si din reactia localnicilor, cred ca erau bucurosi de faptul ca puteau respira. Strazile sunt inguste, de piatra, si chiar daca se pot parcurge cu masina va recomand atentie pentru a nu sfarsi in zone din care nu puteti iesi. Portul este asa cum l-am vazut in filme, plin de imbarcatiuni de lux, restaurante cu terase cochete, case colorate care in lumina soarelui raspandesc o stralucire calda. Chiar si in luna martie portul este plin de pictori care isi expun operele ce reprezinta orasul, sperand sa atraga atentia vreunui turist. Orasul este construit pe o colina, cred ca si acesta a fost un motiv impotriva expansunii sale, si in trecut portul servea si pentru a respinge atacurile inamicilor. In varful colinei se gaseste in continuare cetatea cu tunurile ce aparau orasul chiar daca acum a fost transformata in muzeu. Daca va aflati pe aici va recomand sa vizitati cetatea pentru a va bucura de privelistea ce o ofera asupra marii si orasului dar si pentru a va documenta asupra istoriei orasului, locuitorilor sai si a coastei de azur. Acestea fiind spuse va las sa admirati si sa cunoasteti orasului si cetatea si din imagini.

Quando sentiamo parlare di Saint Tropez ci immaginiamo una città elegante, cosmopolita, piena di turisti e imbarcazioni di lusso, una destinazione per l'élite sociale. Alla fine di marzo, per il mio compleanno, abbiamo fatto una piccola incursione sulla Costa Azzurra in Francia, di cui vi ho gà parlato il mese scorso, e una delle città visitate era anche Saint Tropez. Voglio dire prima di tutto che Saint Tropez è una piccola e accogliente città come ci aspettavamo, e per niente cosmopolita. In quei giorni i turisti erano pochi e dalla reazione della gente del luogo, credo che erano contenti di poter respirare. Le strade sono strette, in pietra, e anche se è possibile viaggiare in auto vi consiglio di fare attenzione per non finire in aree senza uscita. Il porto è come l'avevo visto nei film, pieno di imbarcazioni di lusso, ristoranti con terrazze accoglienti, case colorate che alla luce del sole diffondono un caldo splendore. Anche nel mese di marzo il porto è pieno di artisti che espongono le loro opere rappresentando la città, nella speranza di attirare l'attenzione di qualsiasi turista. La città è costruita su una collina, penso che sia stato uno dei motivi che ha impedito l'espansione, il suo porto in passato serviva anche per respingere gli attacchi nemici. In cima alla collina si trova ancora la cittadella con i cannoni che difendevano la città anche se adesso è stato trasformata in un museo. Se vi doveste trovare qui vi consiglio di visitare la cittadella per godere della vista che offre sul mare e sulla città, ma anche per documentarsi sulla storia della città, i suoi abitanti e la Costa Azzurra. Detto questo vi lascio ammirare e conoscere la città e la cittadella anche attraverso le immagini.

When we hear about Saint Tropez we imagine an elegant, cosmopolitan city full of tourists and luxury boats, a destination for the social elite. At the end of March, for my birthday, we made a small incursion on the French Riviera in France, of which I already talked to you last month, and one of the cities visited was also Saint Tropez. I mean first of all that Saint Tropez is a small and welcoming city as we expected, and in no way cosmopolitan. In those days tourists were few and from the locals' reaction, I think they were happy to breathe. The roads are narrow, in stone, and although you can travel by car I recommend you be careful not to end up in no exit areas. The harbor is as I have seen in the movies, full of luxury boats, restaurants with cozy terraces, colorful houses that in the sunlight spread a warm glow. Even during the month of March, the port is full of artists exhibiting their works that represent the city, hoping to attract the attention of any tourist. The city is built on a hill, I think it was one of the reasons that prevented expansion, its port in the past also served to repel enemy attacks. On the top of the hill there still is the citadel with the cannons that defended the city even though it has now been transformed into a museum. If you are here I would recommend visiting the citadel to enjoy the sea and city views, but also to document yourself on the history of the city, its inhabitants and the Côte d'Azur. That being said I let you admire and get know the city and the citadel also through the pictures.
