Ciao carissimi lettori,

Oggi ritorno con una recensione letteraria, la recensione di un famoso romanzo di un altrettanto famoso scrittore e filosofo tedesco, vincitore anche del premio Nobel per la letteratura. Il romanzo s’intitola Siddhartha e l’autore è Hermann Hesse e nonostante fosse pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1922, attirò l’attenzione del pubblico solo dopo che lo scrittore vinse il Nobel nel 1946 quando suscitò l’interesse degli adolescenti alla ricerca di loro stessi, accomunati dal rifiuto per un mondo e una storia angosciante. Tornò di nuovo in voga negli anni sessanta e settanta quando il mondo giovanile e artistico rivolse il suo interesse verso la cultura orientale e soprattutto indiana nella ricerca di una filosofia pacifica. Siddhartha è un romanzo storico e di formazione, storico perché ambientato in India nel VI secolo a.C. e ispirato alla vita del Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama e di formazione perché narra e illustra il percorso che il personaggio Siddhartha affronta da quando abbandona la casa del padre per unirsi agli asceti samana fino a quando diventa il Buddha. Il Buddha reale viene raffigurato nel nostro romanzo come un personaggio secondario, sotto il nome di Gotama, mentre il nostro eroe è più un pratyekabuddha o buddha solitario. Come menzionato precedentemente, questo è un romanzo con un importante carattere filosofico in quanto s’ispira a varie dottrine come l’induismo, con particolare riguardo per l’ascetismo e il brahmanesimo e il buddhismo, sia nella sua forma originale, conosciuta oggi anche con il nome di theravada sia in una forma elaborata dal nostro protagonista e più simile agli insegnamenti di Nāgārjuna che mette sullo stesso piano nirvana e samsara, virtù e peccato. Oltre a queste dottrine, in Siddhartha l’autore coinvolge anche la filosofia di Schopenhauer, Henri Bergson e Nietzsche.

I personaggi di questo libro sono Siddhartha, il personaggio principale che presta il nome per il titolo del romanzo, il suo amico fidato Govinda, Kamala, la donna che fa allontanare Siddhartha dalla vita di asceta, Kamaswami, il commerciante che fa scoprire al nostro personaggio principale, il vizio, la lussuria e l’avidità, Gotama il Buddha e Vasudeva, il barcaiolo che salva letteralmente e filosoficamente la vita al nostro eroe, aiutandolo a scoprire la salvezza e diventare il Buddha. Ho scelto di non svelare tutti i personaggi di questo romanzo perché come ben sappiate, non mi piace rivelare più del dovuto per lasciare al lettore il piacere di scoprire gli eventi attraverso la lettura. Quello che posso rivelare per quanto riguarda la trama di questo romanzo è che il percorso formativo del nostro eroe lo porta a sperimentare la vita sotto ogni aspetto. Siddhartha parte da una vita da asceta e sperimenta in seguito il peccato sotto ogni forma, dal peccato carnale a quello della mente e dell’anima. Questo momento della sua vita lo aiuta ad uccidere il suo Io, la parte della sua persona che la vita da asceta ha solo nutrito e rinforzato. Uccidendo il suo Io riesce a ritornare bambino, sciocco, impotente creando le basi per il nuovo Siddhartha e perciò per il futuro Buddha. Ma per arrivare a diventare il Buddha, Siddhartha dovrà prima toccare il fondo, tentare il suicidio ed essere salvato una seconda volta da Vasudeva, il barcaiolo che diventerà il suo grande amico. Il romanzo si conclude con la visione del mondo del nuovo Siddhartha, la visione che il Buddha del nostro romanzo, un Buddha solitario, con una concezione sua, in parte diversa dal buddhismo tradizionale e totalmente diversa da qualsiasi concezione occidentale.

La narrazione di questo romanzo è fluida, il linguaggio comprensibile e accessibile a tutti, il flusso della lettura, nel mio caso, essendo stato interrotto solo dal desiderio di soffermarmi a rileggere certe frasi, analizzarle, individuare il concetto che si celava dietro, trarre le conclusioni necessarie e annotarle. Confido che ogni lettore troverà interessante questo libro perché verrà catturato dalle idee espresse, dal filo della narrazione e dell’argomentazione di ogni concetto indipendentemente dal fatto che potrà o meno trovarsi in accordo con loro o con il finale e perciò consiglio il romanzo Siddhartha a tutti coloro che cercano una lettura valida e ricca di spunti di riflessione.

Today I return with a book review, the review of a famous novel by an equally famous German writer and philosopher, who also won the Nobel Prize for literature. The novel is called Siddhartha and the author is Hermann Hesse and although it was published for the first time in 1922, it attracted public attention only after the writer won the Nobel in 1946 when it aroused the interest of teenagers in search of who they were and united by the rejection of an anguishing world and history. It came back in vogue in the sixties and seventies when the youth and artistic world turned his interest towards oriental and especially Indian culture in the search for a peaceful philosophy. Siddhartha is a historical novel and a bildungsroman, historical because it is set in India in the 6th century BC and inspired by the life of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama and a bildungsroman because it narrates and illustrates the path that the character Siddhartha faces from when he leaves his father's house to join the samana ascetics until he becomes the Buddha. The real Buddha is depicted in our novel as a minor character, under the name of Gotama, while our hero is more of a pratyekabuddha or solitary buddha. As previously mentioned, this is a novel with an important philosophical character as it is inspired by various doctrines such as Hinduism, with particular regard to asceticism and Brahmanism and Buddhism, both in its original form, also known today as theravada, as in a form elaborated by our protagonist and more similar to the teachings of Nāgārjuna who puts nirvana and samsara, virtue and sin on the same level. In addition to these doctrines, in Siddhartha the author also involves the philosophy of Schopenhauer, Henri Bergson and Nietzsche.

The characters in this book are Siddhartha, the main character who lends his name to the title of the novel, his trusted friend Govinda, Kamala, the woman who takes Siddhartha away from the life of an ascetic, Kamaswami, the trader who makes our main character discover vice, lust and greed, Gotama the Buddha and Vasudeva, the boatman who literally and philosophically saves our hero's life, helping him to discover salvation and become the Buddha. I have chosen not to reveal all the characters in this novel because as you well know, I don't like to reveal more than necessary to leave the reader the pleasure of discovering the events through reading. What I can reveal about the plot of this novel is that our hero's formative path leads him to experience life in every aspect. Siddhartha starts from an ascetic life and later experiences sin in every form, from carnal sin to that of the mind and soul. This moment in his life helps him to kill his ego, the part of his person that life as an ascetic has only nourished and strengthened. By killing his ego he manages to return to being a child, foolish, impotent, creating the basis for the new Siddhartha and therefore for the future Buddha. But to become the Buddha, Siddhartha will first have to hit rock bottom, attempt suicide and be saved a second time by Vasudeva, the boatman who will become his great friend. The novel concludes with the new Siddhartha's vision of the world, the vision that the Buddha of our novel, a solitary Buddha, with a conception of his own, partly different from traditional Buddhism and totally different from any Western conception.

The narration of this novel is fluid, the language understandable and accessible to all, the flow of reading, in my case, having been interrupted only by the desire to stop and re-read certain sentences, analyze them, identify the concept behind them, draw necessary conclusions and write them down. I trust that every reader will find this book interesting because they will be captivated by the ideas expressed, the thread of narration and argumentation of each concept regardless of whether or not they may agree with them or with the ending and therefore I recommend the novel Siddhartha to all those looking for a valid read full of food for thought.
