Ciao carissimi lettori,

Oggi ritorno con una brevissima recensione letteraria. Perché brevissima, mi chiederete voi e l’unica risposta che posso dare è che non c’era tanto da discutere. Il libro si chiama Hotel Bella Vista e l’autore è la scrittrice francese Colette. Nonostante io abbia letto parecchia letteratura francese nella mia vita, soprattutto alle superiori dove ho studiato lingue straniere e frequentavo in totale 7 ore settimanali di francese fra letteratura, grammatica, storia, geografia e cultura francese, non avevo ancora letto alcun libro di questa scrittrice. I miei professori erano più concentrati su scrittori come Balzac, Maupassant, Dumas, sia padre che figlio, Proust, Voltaire e onestamente devo dire che nonostante sia evidente che anche Colette li abbia letti e si fosse ispirata a loro nel suo romanzo, purtroppo non c’è paragone fra gli autori precedentemente nominati e Colette.

Il libro è brevissimo e i personaggi sono interessanti e malgrado tutto ciò, questo è il primo libro che leggo negli ultimi mesi che mi abbia annoiato. Sebbene avesse solo 168 pagine, ho impiegato circa due settimane per finirlo perché tutte le volte che lo prendevo in mano la sera finivo per addormentarmi dopo aver letto solo un paio di pagine e nel fine settimana non mi attirava affatto. La narrazione è statica e pesante e non offre grandi spunti di riflessione. Il libro percorre diverse storie vissute e raccontate da diversi personaggi e nonostante abbia faticato con il primo capitolo le storie di solidarietà e umanità descritte nei capitoli Gribiche e L’appuntamento (Rendez-vous) mi ha fatto sperare in un mondo migliore. Questo denota il fatto che nonostante racconti le bruttezze della vita, Colette sia essenzialmente una persona ottimista e idealista. Ho apprezzato moltissimo anche la capacità di descrivere i tratti fisici e il modo in cui i personaggi interagiscono in questo piccolo universo fatto di lembi, colori, lacrime e forme.

Questo libro non mi ha offerto occasioni per scoprire elementi nuovi o per analizzare concetti particolari e se non fosse per le dinamiche che si creano fra i personaggi probabilmente non lo avrei nemmeno finito. Non è un libro che mi abbia impressionato particolarmente però ho apprezzato il suo carattere soporifero.

Today I return with a very brief literary review. Why a bief review, you will ask me and the only answer I can give is that there was not much to discuss. The book is called Hotel Bella Vista and the author is the French writer Colette. Although I have read a lot of French literature in my life, especially in high school where I studied foreign languages and attended a total of 7 hours per week of French between literature, grammar, history, geography and French culture, I had not yet read any book by this writer. My professors were more focused on writers like Balzac, Maupassant, Dumas, both father and son, Proust, Voltaire and honestly I must say that although it is obvious that Colette also read them and was inspired by them in her novel, unfortunately there is no comparison between the previously named authors and Colette.

The book is very short and the characters are interesting and despite all this, this is the first book I have read in recent months that has bored me. Although it only had 168 pages, it took me about two weeks to finish it because every time I picked it up during evenings I ended up falling asleep after only reading a couple of pages and at the weekend it didn't appeal to me at all. The narrative is static and unwieldy and it isn't a great food for thought. The book covers different stories lived and told by different characters and despite having struggled with the first chapter the stories of solidarity and humanity described in the chapters “Gribiche” and “The appointment” (Rendez-vous) made me hope for a better world. This denotes the fact that despite telling the ugliness of life, Colette is essentially an optimistic and idealistic person. I also really appreciated the ability to describe the physical traits and the way the characters interact in this small universe made of laps, colors, tears and shapes.

This book did not offer me opportunities to discover new elements or to analyze particular concepts and if it were not for the dynamics that are created between the characters I probably would not have even finished it. It is not a book that has particularly impressed me but I appreciated its soporific nature.
